  • Genuine, and a unique part of Norwegian culture

As I'm seeing a few low reviews on this list, as a Norwegian I'd like to clarify a few things. The show's creator wanted, in large part, to make a show illustrating mental health issues that happen to young men. It's something that doesn't really get touched upon in modern media (although, if you have examples, correct me if I'm wrong). The scene that these people are involved in, are pretty much exclusive to Norway and Sweden in my experience. Putting a V8 engine in a Volve 240, is not something that most people would think to do. But in a Norwegian subculture called "rånere", it's a way of life. Hanging out with your friends, fixing and improving your car, living the easy life. For some American kids, it might be parties when your parents are out of town, or frat parties when you've gone away to college. For the young people in this series, this is their culture. Driving, seemingly endlessly, in a small rural community where the options to stimulate you are limited. It strikes at the core of the youth experience for a lot of people. Your clique. Who you hang out with. What are your common interests? Cars? Girls? Drinking? It's a unique way of how it is to be young. Are they first world problems? Sure they are. But that doesn't mean that they are any less relevant to the human experience. Personally, I love the show and I think it takes some bold steps, like Skam, to bring up important aspects that often don't get depicted as realistically in a TV show.
