So here's the deal: I know the film maker. I decided to watch his film to get a glimpse into his art. As with all art, this effort comes from within. He made "something from nothing." In my mind, this is the essence of being fully human. Creating something from nothing. All art is worthy.
Now, turning to the film, I happen to have an appreciation for the budgetary constraints here. The question for me is: how good is the result relative to the constraints? (Think of water world, huge budget, lousy outcome considering this). So for Simple Creature I think very good. It is an interesting story told primarily with dialogue, implication, and inference. It's a "head space" film. If you're not cerebral or primarily an adrenaline junkie (think John Wick) then you won't like this film. If you are thoughtful, like dialogue, and are appreciative of competent filming technique and story telling, then you will enjoy this. Well done in my book, especially given to budgetary constraints.
