I had such high hopes for this film. It's certainly watchable but it could've been so much better. It's got the typical Coppola aesthetic but the acting was just not up to standard.
I really hoped Pamela could deliver but she didn't sell it for me, that whispery voice of hers was too distracting for me. I liked the parts of her more where she wasn't talking.
Jamie Lee Curtis was fabulous, she salvaged the film in some ways though I wish her dance scene was a little more believable. I doubt that's what an ex showgirl would do on a podium.
And what's with all the shots of Pam standing in random places in Vegas? Just to make it look pretty??

Honestly, I watched this when it first aired in the 80's and it was funny then, and it's still a good watch now.
However, rewatching it in a 2025 lens is eye opening. Dorothy was abusive. She man handled her mother, she physically hit Rose with newspapers and magazines in frustration, and was always mean to her.
Blanch is hilarious though. Rue's brilliance at the southern accent really adds to the character of Blanch, the mannerisms of a southern belle are so on point.

Who's going to tell them the Australian actress they chose to play a British woman made no effort to make herself sound British. So did they think she sounded British? I'm so confused. She sounds Australian. She is Australian. Just say she was Australian.
I'm so glad they stopped the talking heads. They totally pull you out of the moment and weren't necessary.
Also glad they changed her apartment from the monstrosity that this pilot episode put her in. Did anyone notice the nightmare of a chandelier in her lounge room?? What the hell was the set dresser doing?
Thank god the characters carry this episode.
