Because seriously, seriously? Having watched this movie all the way to the end, I feel like I just got pranked or something. When I saw Taissa Farmiga and Michael C. Hall I thought, "Ooh, this is promising." NOPE. The joke is on me apparently. I only gave it one star because you can't give them zero. I actually quite enjoy a good slow, character driven movie when it's well put together. But this one is painfully slow and uneventful. There isn't much in the way of character development either. If you've read the description of the movie you basically know the entire plot. Family goes into the hole. Kid wanders around doing nothing. The end. Save yourself the time.
I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting from this movie. That being said, it may have been exactly what I was expecting? It's just what the description says it is. One thing is for sure: it is not a horror movie. It's a drama. I'm not sure when they started calling movies like this horror. In a stretch, maybe you could call it a thriller. Anyway, this movie is a lot. Without any spoilers, I can say that the bullying is pretty extreme. It made me a little uncomfortable, to be honest. And I'm used to watching all sorts of horror and Law & Order-type shows. It is worth watching to the end. It isn't a bad movie. I just think you should go into it with your eyes open.
Seriously. You'll laugh one moment and cry the next. This movie is full of morbid humour. But at the same time, it has great character development. You'll get so personally invested in their story that when the zombies show up, and people inevitably start to drop, it will break your heart.
The music is also top notch. The first time I watched the movie I expected to laugh AT it. When they started singing I was shocked at how good the songs were. The actors are fantastic singers as well. All of them. Without exception. I'm especially partial to Soldier at War. It's such a fun song.
I can't remember how I came across this movie, but now I watch it every year. It's not Christmas until I watch it.
