I quite like the rather corny Death in Paradise, so was ready for this version, but it lacks something the original has which I can't quite put my finger on. Perhaps its the acting, which overall isn't great. I think the lead actor was miscast. I understand she is supposed to be on the autism spectrum and lack empathy, but she just looks expressionless and her character isn't likeable. I have no idea why she is always dressed in the same clothes, this is distracting. I realise its supposed to be corny but this show isn't convincing or quirky. It seems like it's made for a UK audience and they may like the beach scenes.
I understand the makers want to set the scene, but a roadblock to me enjoying a good story is when the narrators, clearly proud of their city and gallery, exaggerate the gallery's standing i.e. Being up there as a world glass gallery etc etc. Other narrators talk about the 1980's in Melbourne as being more intense than Brisbane's or Sydney's punk scenes. Its not necessary and it put this viewer off.
First time I've watched DCI Banks and I thought I was watching a send up (spoof) show. The predictable, corny lines, the overacting. I expected way more from these well known lead actors, but it was so hammy, maybe it was the script. I am used to British crime shows that are good, but this...it's really bad.
