Gavin Newsom's podcast episode with Brandon "Atrioc" Ewing starts off awkwardly, with Newsom steering the first third toward gaming, esports, and culture war talking points that feel far removed from Gen Z's real frustrations. Ewing, however, avoids the superficial and persistently redirects the conversation to deeper issues; housing, relationships, job prospects, and the genuine economic struggles that drive Gen Z's disenchantment. The episode's heart comes when Ewing directly raises the notion that Newsom may soon be a presidential candidate versus Trump, but makes clear that simply restoring a "status quo" isn't enough. Young people need more than empty gestures. To Newsom's credit, he doesn't get defensive; as the discussion progresses, he actually absorbs this critique, increasingly recognizing how his peers have alienated younger voters. By the end, there's meaningful engagement: Newsom's willingness to listen, and Ewing's insistence on real change, make for a surprisingly frank, relevant dialog on what Gen Z actually needs. This feels like much more than a politician's tired talking points.
The entire movie felt like slop. The action scenes had dialogue, and the dialogue felt like it was written by a teenager. I think me and my mates made better stories playing one-word turns in school.
The movie didn't have a story worth telling. More importantly not only were the lines rubbish, but the lines were poorly delivered. I genuinely believe the acting was terrible on all parts, like the actors knew it was going to flop so they put in minimal effort.
If Gunn is set on including Blue Beetle in the DCU, then I hope all the characters are recast.
Any part of the movie that had a chance of being sincere and serious had to be broken up by a joke. I think there's one poorly written joke every 5 minutes, and the family is interjected with moronic singing and stereotyped vibes every second. Like if you're going to write an eccentric family into the film, they don't have to joke every second.
At some points the family is in danger and they laugh off the danger as if they have plot armour that they know about. Remember these are normal people, not superheroes and they just believe they can't be killed or something? Especially moments after a significant scene that should force the family to reflect that they're maybe getting in the way?
If I had to sum this movie up I wouldn't be surprised if it was released as a budget PowerRangers movie. Not something I'd expect from a multimillion dollar production company.
