  • Enormous fun!

I just love all the explosions and car crashes in this absurdist film. Jose Ferrer is excellent as the evil wheelchair bound husband. It was a kick seeing Sue Lyon but I don't know why they gave this role to her. I guess she does okay with the role (anyone would), but it just seems like a very random choice. Anyway it's a very clever, funny, strange, little film. I love the weird red eyes. And the scene with the dog and the wheelchair is a real hoot.

The one thing that I don't get is what Band meant by showing the ghost car getting into the same crashes twice. It is only in the latter half or latter third of the film that Kim seems to be directing the car telepathically, so what are we to make of the earlier scenes of the car driving around by itself? The only way to make sense of it is it is some kind of post modern narrative technique where Band was showing us things that happen later in a kind of flash forward situation. How else explain that the exact same crashes appear to happen twice? Was the car just driving around by itself and it only came under her control later?

  • Strange, funny, not scary

Whereas I love the cast in this film, it is a big step down from TCM. Brand is certainly weird and kind of funny but he's not scary. Altho the film has a huge body count, all the murders are very one note and repetitive. It is not even clear why Judd kills any of them. And why does he take Faye prisoner? What purpose is served by tying her up on the bed? What does he plan to do with her? The answer can't just be well he's crazy.

I think the script is to blame. Hooper said the film had as many scripts as it had titles. He said he wasn't happy with the original script and he and Henkel tried to make it better. They should have tried harder. For instance, what are Libby and her dad hanging around for after they turn up no leads with regard to her missing sister? There is nothing more for them to do at that point. How is it Buck starts out the movie at the whorehouse but then like halfway or three quarters of the way through the film suddenly he has a girlfriend? It is so obvious that Lynette only makes an appearance because the film's producer wanted a nude scene. The moment I saw her huge chest I knew what was up. And what is Judd's deal? It seems like he may have lost his mind when he was a soldier. Some of his mumbling seems to suggest that he spent some time in the military.

I love William Finley's performance as Roy, Faye's disturbed husband. But what's the story with him and Faye? It is just what's the story all over the place with this film. There is no character development. It's better when you have an idea where these people came from, why they are the way they are, and also you ought to have an idea what it is they are hoping to do in the future. That way you give more of a damn what happens with them.

In any case it is certainly a fun and strange film. Whereas the nudity was very gratuitous I certainly was glad it was there. But even so it was yet another example of how lopsided and slipshod the film was. If you are going to have nudity why shove all the nude scenes into the flipping denouement? Better to have it sprinkled here and there throughout the film. It just seems clumsy and random this way, like Hooper was saying, "Oh you wanted some nudity? Here you go!"
