The title had me thinking it would be more sensationalized sound effects and such. Ended up being a lot more geology and cited ancient texts.
Highly plausible a long draught caused unrest in the region, especially with the despotism of the time. Then a nasty earthquake sparks waves of refugees and invaders.
Which of course destroys waterways and sewage in an already malnourished population. Inevitably leading to outbreaks of numerous diseases, even the royal families dying of small pox and the like.
Not too different from the current situation in several countries today. Just shake the jar a little and you too can be a forgotten civilization!
