Episodes eight and nine could easily been reduced to one episode. They have really dragged out episode nine with all the introspection of the main character, who I find a little annoying. It's not been a great series. Some of the acting has been pretty poor. The main reason I have stayed with it so far was the novelty of watching a South African drama series. The country has a reputation for violent crime and some of the serial killing has been gruesome. Having got this far I will probably continue to the end, but it's not a TV series I shall ever return to. I don't want to write any more about it.
I can't believe I am the first person to review this brilliant TV series. I would have been too young to watch it in 1971, but the BBC have recently been showing old classic TV series on BBC4. I have rewatched Our friends in the north, How green was my valley, The singing detective and The roads to freedom. Sunset Song is just as good.
It tells the story of Chris Guthrie, her family and the local farming community in NE Scotland. I had to watch with subtitles as the Scottish dialect is difficult to follow, but it does make the drama more real. Vivien Heilbron is perfect as Chris as is Andrew Keir as her difficult father, but all the acting was first class as was the direction and pacing.
It will be available on BBC iplayer for several months.

There are some interesting interviews with the writers, actors etc.but the editing is awful. We jump from one person to the next every few seconds and have endless clips from the tv series. All played out with percussive music.
