I just went through a series of submarine movies while during vacation. While there is not "the only best one", U-571 is easily sticking out at the bottom of the list. The first time I watched this was during its release. I was visiting the U. S. and I couldn't understand why people in the movie theater were applauding. I'm glad to read the many reviews here from U. S. veterans and proud military who consider this movie to be nonsense fiction. It's not just fiction, it's pure manipulation, stipulating "good and bad" in it's worst way and for many viewers in a hideous way; should be forbidden. An example that lots of money, well-known actors and the hollywood seal do not guarantee a good movie.
Reading the reviews here, it seems to be a love it or hate it movie - I don't understand why. I grew up watching the original Das Boot as TV series and went through all the submarine movies. Instead of comparing the incomparable and saying what is flawed etc., I simply want to point out what I liked watching this movie twice:
- refreshing actor set, no B-movie characters just like "could be your neighbour" type
- storyline that could happen, although we normal people would never hear about it
- great music/ambience perfectly fitting the setting
- straightforward effects, less is more
- happy end without happy end, evoked emotions
- overall a very refreshing, non-cliche Hollywood-type movie.
