I was pleasantly surprised to see this show on the BBC. It's so rare to see disabled characters taking the lead and made for a refreshing change.
The show overall strikes a good balance between showing the realities of living with a life-changing disability and yet it not wholly being a show ABOUT disability. We get to see Freya, a tetraplegic, for who she is as a person rather than just a set of needs and inabilities.
As someone with a disability, it felt relatable without feeling like I was just watching a depressing tale about all the issues we can face, which can often happen.
There were a lot of loose ends and questions at the end of season 1, so I'm hoping we get more episodes. But definitely a very solid start to a new drama series.

This show is such a rarity - it has everything; the perfect balance of humour and genuine emotion; great soundtrack; well developed characters. Queer people, and not just model-perfect 20 year old ones at that! I see myself in the characters of this show, despite never having set foot on a proper ship.
Our flag means death has carried me through some tough times. Whilst isolating in the ongoing pandemic, it provides an adventure to far off lands. While the world seems grim and doomed, it provides escapism and hope.
I feel genuine grief that OFMD has been cancelled. They only ever wanted 3 series to tell this story and yet it has been cut short with only 2. I know there are other queer shows, but I don't want those characters, I want Stede and Ed and Jim and Olu and the rest of the crew. Other shows just aren't the same. I hope that maybe HBO will change its decision or some other network will pick up this amazing, popular pirate show.
