I know nothing about the Borderlands game personally but if the other reviews are anything to go by then this isn't it. You like to think that a trailer gives away some of the best parts of a movie but in this case it gave them all away. Mediocre and stilted, interspersed with some light hearted comedy moments Star Wars did the comedic droid thing to death, it's barely amusing anymore. I like Cate Blanchett but I don't think the role suited her. Kevin Hart is usually a pretty decent comedy character but his character was just wooden. The rest of the cast were just background noise really. Ariana Greenblatt played her role well I thought. Hopefully she has a strong and successful career ahead of her but I was completely underwhelmed and disappointed by the movie as a whole. If I knew more about the Borderlands game I have a feeling this shot well wide of the mark. Unfortunate and uninspiring.
I'm giving it a 6 out of 10 because Jodie Comer was excellent. Star of the show for me but she doesn't seem to put a foot wrong at the moment. Austin (for me) tried to play the deep sullen type put it didn't suit him. I don't know was he trying to evoke James Dean or what. He barely spoke, and came off as a little bit slow in my opinion. Tom Hardy owned his role, he was gritty and dark, his character was relatable but odd. All in all it never really came together for me. I'll forget I watched this shortly. The bikes, the clothes, the scenery, fight scenes etc were all excellent, it just flatlined in my opinion. I felt it had way more potential.
I was simply disappointed. For a film with plenty of potential to build a new franchise, a new journey, it just seemed to borrow from to many other story lines, like a rehash of stories told one hundred times before. Charlie Hunnams awful attempt at a northern Irish accent was completely unnecessary and added nothing to his character. So many other characters were lacking in any kind of individuality. Like they were just there to fill a gap in the story. Ultimately it felt like a movie lost in its own self importance and hype that just left me feeling underwhelmed and disappointed. Not Zach Snyders finest moment.by any stretch of the imagination.
