I usually avoid Australian comedies (even British co-productions such as this) as they are either total rubbish or in about 2% of cases astonishingly brilliant. Austin falls into the latter category. I would have awarded it 10 stars but was forced to deduct one due to an early scene in which Ben Miller appears in his underpants. Nobody wants that.
The characters are beautifully written and wonderfully acted, the casting was flawless with the possible exception of Kate Elliott (Heidi) whose mugging becomes tiresome. Charlotte Nicdao (Yolanda) is a standout, I found myself watching each of her scenes twice to make sure that I didn't miss a moment of her performance.
Michael Theo as Austin is the skilful glue that holds this together. What a star.

The New Zealand series lacked the atmosphere of ghe others that I'd seen. The house looked like it would have been quite a decent AirB&B - it could have done with a decent clean before shooting started.
The contestants followed the same characters as other versions, eg the former cop who brought her keen observation skills to the table yet couldn't pick a traitor to save her life, over the top reactions to other contestants within minutes of meeting each other etc.
What would have really improved this version would have been the opportunity to either kill or banish the host within the first two episodes. He was the weakest link - goodbye.

A few minutes in I thought that there was nothing and nobody I would like in this, so I thought I'd give it a little longer.
I was wrong - giving it a even an extra moment longer was a waste of time.
There is nothing sympathetic about any of the characters. Early on, there's a homeless woman who is given a kick - her mugging made me think, well, I wouldn't have kicked her myself but I don't really care.
I blame the writer and director for this mess. Inexperienced actors are going to accept any job that they're offered- I wish anyone appearing in this thing all the best in their future careers, and I hope that they realise that their aspiration as performers is the wrong direction. Office admin is a great place for perky young people to look for work, and there's heaps of scope to overact when working in an office - just think about the way people perform when the Lite and Lo runs out.
So as not to be totally negative, I'll point out that there's a very nice shot of a lovely tree at the 47 minute mark. Best watched with the sound down.
