La madrina del diablo (1937)
It deserves better than a 6.1 score...
The biggest problem in this movie is that several things that could be really interesting and exciting to watch unfold are merely skipped over and told through dialogue rather than drama, I imagine that it is for the sake of budget constrictions, but c'mon!, this could be so much more spectacular if they actually delved into the story of "The Devil" (El Diablo), instead of just telling us about it, that's just greedy and cheap, the audience and the actors and crew deserve better, they should have gotten the chance to really showcase their talent in the Robin Hood-esque Action/ Adventure Tale that we could have gotten out of this adaptation (considering the novel and the myths/legends it's based on), if it wasn't for the producer's avarice and lack of vision. However, what is good is good, the camera work is pretty good for the time, the music is quite pretty and sometimes beautiful, though there are moments where it doesn't fit the scene and comes across as ridiculous, but it doesn't get to the point of completely ruining the experience or anything like that. Jorge Negrete is amazing as always, both as dramatic performer, selling every single line/gesture, and as a singer and musician, I mean Holy Cow!, This was a Star!, and the other actor are nothing spectacular, but they're perfectly functional and believable enough, they do their jobs well. Anyway, I just don't think it deserves such a low, barely approving score, I think it should get at least a 7.0, so I'm just trying to contribute to raising that average. I was never bored watching this movie, which I found quite surprising, and I actually found myself feeling a great deal for the characters, especially in the ending.
SPOILER:
A good enough Tragic Romance that does entertain and engage, despite it's deficiencies (damn producers and their constant wasting of narrative opportunities).
Happy Death Day 2 U (2019)
This movie isn't an ACTUAL 8, It's more of a really enjoyable 6, but HEAR ME OUT!!!!
It is funny, it is VERY well paced, it's corny as hell, but in a good way, I LAUGHED MY A$$ OFF with the visual jokes of this irreverent, 90 minutes sketch. The performances are decent, the directing is functional, the writing is mostly ok (the dialogue is super corny and sketchy, but the delivery makes it work). I can't believe this movie MADE ME CRY, TWICE, so yeah, the emotional climaxes are well crafted, with proper cathartic build up. I was seldom scared, but I was invested, caring about the characters. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT NOW I WANT A THIRD ONE!. This couple of movies have been incredibly satisfying, they have a lot of heart and you can see that everyone's having tons of fun with their parts, you can see the commitment, so yeah, the rating sould at least be a 6.5 or something, definately something higher than 6.2. You are not gonna like this movie if "Horror Comedies" that DARE to be silly and unapologetically corny are simply not your thing, as I said, this is meant to be a 90 minutes long, VERY emotionally gratifying sketch, It ain't an OSCAR HUNTER, it ain't meant to change your life by blowing your mind while breaking your heart, this isn't "The Tomb Of The Fireflies" or something, this is a freaking Horror Comedy, mostly COMEDY, and it isn't trying to be a super smart, sophisticated social critic whith highly philosophical text, or subtext; This ain't Rick & Morty, nor is it trying to be!!!. This is simply a fun ride, and now I can't wait for the completion of the trilogy. TRILOGY!, TRILOGY!, TRILOGY!... XD.
Ben 10: Ben 10,000 (2006)
I wish I could give a this 10,000 stars. That would be pretty neat
Ok, so obviously this episode, being the 27th of the show, depends on previous cathartic build up quite heavily, but that doesn't mean it does stand on it's own as an excelent work of art by itself, I'm not speaking from nostalgia here, I did watch this show as a child, but sporadically and inconsistently, and this is one of the episodes I never got to watch back in the 2000's (or at least I don't recall having done so), I just recenly started watching the full series in a proper progession, because I wanted to know if it is as good as I remembered, and it's WAY BETTER, so far it's had great world building, story and character development and a truly exciting superhero plot, with a dramatic execution that would make dozens, if not hundreds of action movies look so emarrasingly poor in artistic quality, seriously, so far it's been amazing just how effective the action tales in this show can be, and how much artistically better a random twenty minute episode of this show can be, than the vast majority of feature length LIVE ACTION BLOCKBUSTERS. And this episode showcases what this marvelous serialized animation can offer in under half an hour, it is just so perfectly well crafted in every aspect, and it can be perfectly enjoyed without much knowledge of previous episodes, but it's still a much better experience if enjoyed in the order that's proper. I don't wanna spoil anything, so I'll just say that, this episode has made the past 26 worth it, not to say that they weren't already pretty amazing anyway. Enjoy!
Justice League (2017)
WHY PUT YOURSELF THROUGH THIS?
This is the one movie that I have suffered, I couldn't even IRONICALLY enjoy it. Saying that it is ANYTHING like the artistically MASTERFUL, "Justice League: TAS" By Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Andrea Romano, is deeply ignorant at best, and bordering on blasphemy in the case of certain reviewers... The animated show has everything this long format, BORING trailer has:
1.- Engaging Narrative
2.- Thoughtful Writing
3.- Proper use of NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
4.- GREAT SET UP AND WORLD BUILDING
5.- ACTUAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!
6.-PROPER DIRECTION
7.- PROPER PERFORMANCES.
Also, it is properly well edited, and it has A LOT less budget than this, overproduced parody of itself. Worst of all, is the way this unartistic, corpotative aproach to superhero cinema, has damaged the general public's perception of this magnificent, modern GODS and their wonderfull mythology. I'm deeply saddened by this, I feel so small, and useless, so utterly powerless. Superman is to me like what Jesus is to Christians, or what The Buddha represents to Buddhists, and I can't do anything to stop people from despicing and disregarding Superman as a jockey, overmuscled, Randian, chouvinistic yankee simpleton, because they only know this ignorant and disrespectful caricature that makes a laughable travesty out the one divine figure that's been able to convince me of holding on to life despite my long lasting struggle with depression and nihilism. This kind of prostitution of art for the sake of endless profit is socio-culturally HARMFULL, psychologically WEAKENING, and emotionally malnourishing, and the corporative psychopaths who run the addictive, junk-show, are a DANGER TO SOCIETY, and they should be tried for crimes against humanity.
Why Him? (2016)
SUPER HILARIOUS!
I'TS A 2 HOUR SKETCH. And nothing more, a feature length film format christmas special of a sitcom. And there's not a lot more to it. It's an effective sketch, you will laugh, unless theres some kind of neuropathy getting in the way between you and a really good time. A really fun watch.
Office Christmas Party (2016)
Mediocre but lovable, like most human beings...
This is an average, standar narrative work off art that is only intended to be a long sketch. It is effective in it's purpose, it made me laugh, and made me feel like I went to one of those crazy parties that I'll never attend in real life, like action movies (I'm talking to you "John Wick", you emotionally and artistically mediocre, yet incredibly fun and necessary bastard!) allow me to experience ultraviolent, life threatening scenerios without actually risking my life, or killing anyone. This is art, mediocre, unremarkable, but perfectly valid art, like most people you'll ever meet. And just like a person, it's only special and valuable for aslong as there are people to appreciate it. The cinematic equivalent of everyday folks. Good on small dosage, hellishlly unbearable as an every waking hour default. Like my neighbors. ;)
Adventure Time: The Comet (2015)
COSMICALLY EPIC, AND APOTHEOSICALLY MIND BLOWING!
An example of excellent world building, smart foreshadowing, and explosively climactic, dramatic payoff, this is how you execute a season finale. Just watch the show, it will be worth it!
