If you watch and rate this movie as a WWII movie or a movie about history then you are missing the point. This movie is about the people and their stories at the raw personal level. Too many movies try to go big and tell the big story that's been told a hundred times or cook up some nonsense love story to sell tickets. Or worse yet they try to go with big budget CGI and forget about the people and their lives during the war. The movie follows along with the war fairly accurately and overall the film looks good, but it is not directed or filmed to be a totally accurate portrayal of the war. Interestingly, it does portray the true nature of the Japanese naval aviators and people during the war.
It is one story among countless others that came from that war and its done very well. Its more of a story of what the insanity of war does to people and how its effects can be felt long after the war. From beginning to end it will have you thinking and your emotions will swing back and forth a few times.

Reviewing the first episode of a new series is difficult because much of it is about setting up a season or introducing the characters or story-line. I tend to overlook many things in a new series as the writers are trying to set the basic groundwork of the series. I have been lucky and come across series where it started slow and boring and ended up being much better. In this episode I can see where they tried to wow us with some awesome CGI work, but the episode fell flat in so many other areas. So far the writing, story-line and acting is nonsense. I cannot tell if the actors are horrible or the writing is horrible. Hopefully things will get better.
I thought about being generous and giving this more than one star, but even with actors I do really like in the movie this is a bad movie not worthy of more than one star. I have seen people write a horrible review for this movie and then give it 5 or 6 stars? This is what happens when you spend the money on so many well know actors and assume it will be good...well just because. Half way through I found myself asking myself whats the point here? I did not care about the people or the story...whatever that was supposed to be or what was happening or going to happen in the movie. I pretty much only wondered when it would end. It just meanders and plods along changing directions all over the place with no real direction other than to get to the end of the movie and try to make a serious point with long winded speeches, but by then you have already checked out.
