Before I picked this off the shelf at my local library I was quite familiar with Simon Pegg, but had never heard of Lake Bell. She's wonderful, and their chemistry together is marvelous. The outtakes on the disc display why, because they genuinely enjoy each other, and have way more fun at work than should be allowed.
The story is a variation on the classic mistaken identity romantic comedy device, but it works, so the use of a classic twist doesn't offend me at all. Others have written more comprehensive reviews, so I'll stop here, and let you check them if you want.

My father and uncle both were infantry officers during the second World War, so I've always had an interest in that conflict. Based upon actual events and individuals, this adds significantly to my knowledge of that clash. Years ago I heard mention of the SOE in an episode of Foyle's War, but there was nothing like the detail shown in this film. I have known for a long time that Ian Fleming was involved in Naval intelligence during the war, but seeing him as one of the supporters of this dirty tricks squad really brings him to life for me.
What will surprise some viewers is the amount of humor in this movie. Much of it would be considered black humor, but it is funny. The dedication of a couple of the characters to slaying German soldiers and sailors is completely believable, especially in light of the atrocities visited upon many areas of Europe. I've recommended this film to several friends.

Before today had not seen this film in at least 30 years. I was delighted to find that it holds up well. It could be considered the antecedent to Iron Man, and other such nods to the serial style. What I appreciate is that the excellent special effects exist in order to move the story forward, not as a substitute for a story, as is occasionally seen in newer movies. I also enjoyed the presence of character actors in the cast of whom I was not consciously aware in 1991, but as great fun, enjoyable by anyone.
My review is required to be longer, so let me add my appreciation for the lovely Jennifer Connelly. She is still a talented and attractive woman, and was adorable when she was in her teens, but in The Rocketeer she was in the full bloom of breathtaking adult beauty.
