Wyatt Earp - Kurt Russell - was a well known lawman in Dodge City. Now, he just wants to find silver and lead a quiet, family life in Tombstone Arizaona. Family includes wife Mattie and two brothers. Once there, Earp also is delighted to find old pal Doc Holliday - Val Kilmer. But, whoa. There never was a more unpeaceful town as Tombstone. A ruthless gang, the Cowboys, rule with gunfire against anyone and everyone. Earp discovers too late he may not be " retired " after all. Somebodies have got to STOP the Cowboys. How about a meeting at the OK Corral? Firstly, here is the Wild Wild West in living color. History comes alive. Secondly, what a fabulous cast. There's Russell, Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, Chatlton Heston, and more. Yes, there's violence so be warned. But, here is one of the best Western films ever made.
Little Yuri Zhivago is orphaned when his Father commits suicide by jumping off a train. Happily, family friends the Gromekos take the boy to live with them and their daughter Tonya in Moscow. Yuri grows up to become a physician. Meanwhile, 17 year old Lara - Keira Knightley - lives in poverty with her Mother, a dressmaker. Mama is involved with a smarmy businessman, Komoravsky. As Lara is very beautiful, Mr K soon seduces the young girl. When her Mother learns of this, she tries to kill herself but Dr Zhivago helps save her life. Lara marries a young Bolshevik, Pasha and they move to a small town farther west. At the same time, Yuri marries Tonya and has a son. WW1 breaks out and the Russian Revolution follows soon after. This turns everyone's lives topsy turvy, especially when Yuri and Lara meet serving the wounded Russian soldiers. As the Soviet Union takes power, will anyone's life be peaceful? This fine adaptation of Pasternaks novel can stand beside Leans classic 1965 movie without shame. The actors are younger, giving a fresh feeling to the story. The entire cast is wonderful. Likewise the scenery, costumes and recreation of the time period are grand. Bits of real footage are mingled with the new at various moments. Historical film fans will welcome this one with gusto.
Norma Jean - Ana de Armas - is the daughter of a woman named Gladys. The mother is mentally ill and tells Norma Jean her father is famous but she cannot reveal his name. When she tries to drown NJ, the little 7yr old girl flees to neighbors. Thus, her Mother goes to a mental hospital and Norma Jean lives as an unofficial adopted child. Flash forwarding years, Norma becomes Marilyn Monroe. Her rise to stardom is accompanied by unhappy marriages, a miscarriage and a nightmarish relationship with JFK. All the while, Norma searches for her father, while boozing and drugging from the pain of a public image which is not who she is. Wow. This film, adapted from a novel by Joyce Carol Oates, may not have the whole truth but it certainly has the ring of authenticity. The world " loved " Marilyn but she didn't love herself, wanting to be only Norma Jean. The sensational cast and script is head turning and heart grabbing. Beware: this is a very depressing movie.
