The film having been made in 1930 must be reviewed as if the reviewer was living in that period. The story line is excellent.
Each segment/ chapter introduced with a story line that creates a picture which is excellently portrayed.
John Wayne first main movie role at 23 years old is not what we see in his later years but delivers a simple portrayal of what one would expect of the character he portrays. In my opinion he delivers the character excellently.
The wagon train itself is enormous and the travels throughout the country display the trials and hardships of the pioneers.
The story reflects the courage of those enduring the pioneer trail through the eyes of a filmmaker of 1930.

Great story line. I have not read the book but would like to point out that Russia's Black population has been, and still is near zero.
I understand the need to maintain an unbiased acting crew thus the description should be changed to Fictional Drama.
The series is entertaining but certainly not historical. Ewan McGregor does an excellent performance as the victimized product of the Russian Revolution.
For those unfamiliar with actual history the importance of informing the viewers that the show is an entire work of fiction by using a period in time and place to create a fairytale, which is what a Gentleman in Moscow is.
