A movie about the worst get-together you could attend without it being the reunion in The Invitation. I know that it's from a play, but good grief, it's a long ride of toxicity about four people who shouldn't be married to their respective partners. It's like watching an unending reality TV confrontation. I understand it's a deconstruction of the American family, showing the older couple as the future of the younger couple, or whatever, but it is a great reminder of why some choose not to marry or procreate. The saying that hell is other people certainly seems to be the case for these people. They did a good job of getting across their messages, I guess (?), but it's in no way an enjoyable ride unless you like a toxic brand of drama. Personally, I find it annoying. It might have been revolutionary in the 60s, but it's just toxic "entertainment" in 2025. At least with films depicting toxic and/or contentious relationships like "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" or "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" there are sympathetic characters for balance.
Sidenote: Richard Burton was lazy AF not trying an American accent. How good an actor are you when you can't even achieve a simple American accent?
