To me the series was entertaining. I like Clive Owen, I like France and I enjoyed Owen speak French. So forget Bogart and LA if you can and enjoy rather than compare.
The weakest part is a plot that is a little complicated and artificial, but it does the job of keeping the viewer interested. The best part is the cast and how the actors interact with Spade. There is quite a bit of humor in the various relations, in particular the house keeper. The French of course are all impolite and Spade just rolls along with the punches. The photography is beautiful, the direction is competent, the music is jazz. There is a lot to like.

Wonderful movie about a group of normal people accomplishing an outstanding cultural achievement. It doesn't hurt that those people are portrayed by some of the best actors in Britain. Soft spoken determination and slow moving scenes, plus excellent photography, are the way the movie moves along, the English way. Nicely done.
There are two story lines, quite disjoint. Fortunately the second does not detract from the first. That's how good the actors are. So for those who admire British culture this is a small gem. It's not Trafalgar or the Battle of Britain, just something simple and genuine about the love of national identity by an original people that have a lot of culture. Enjoy.
