  • Arty and breathtaking - highly recommend

Like so many others I kept seeing this come up on netflix. However I was always put off by the poster. To me it looked like a hallmark wanna be. Boy oh boy was I wrong. This movie blew me away. Though I want to state up front that I did not find it perfect, and I did get a little uncomfortable at moments. However this movie masterfully handles the storytelling, filmmaking and even cultural aspects. I honestly think that had it not been for the fact that the age of consent in the U.S. Is 18 ( in Denmark it is 15), this movie would have made a star out of the director and the lovely leading lady. This young actress gives jaw dropping performance.

I would also like to point out the beautiful camera work. The long dolly shots and creative use of light are amazing. While I do wish that the lead actor could have given a more original performance and been less stereotypical. The same statement also goes for a hand full of the supporting cast. However those things do not take away from all of the wonderful points of the film.

    Highly recommended

Please do yourself a favor and watch something else.Anything else. This movie. Man, just when I didn't think the film could get any worse it did. I'm not sure who I should blame first. The director or the screenwriter. I think that the director takes the cake ( by that I mean the blame) for this movie. Mostly because of the horrible acting. Did anyone else see the crazy blonde lady that looked like she walked off SNL? How does a director let something like that happen? and the two lead men? Man did they try. Oh they tried to give us something. But Garret looked like a Disney kid who got lost. Another painful to watch performance came from the director herself staring as none other than boys mother. I think that out of the whole film only two people gave worth while performances. One was the female police offer who had two minutes of screen time and the beautiful Latina lead. They truly did a really good job when you look at the film as a whole. If only they hadn't been apart of this. The film lacked all vision. Nowhere at anytime could I see what they hell the filmmakers where trying to do. I wish that a film on this subject would have gone farther. Gave us something to really think about. But instead it gave us corny character names and cringe worth dialogue. The editing on this film was so amateurish I thought that I was watching the work of a film school drop out. The editor clearly was trying to use Lee Smith's tricks ( Lee Smith editor for many of Christopher Nolan's films) for flash backs and quick cuts. Not a single time was it done properly. Thank god Norman had the walking dead to go back to after this train wreck of a film. Over all the film is completely half baked.

  • Best movie ever! just go see it!!

I think that I should start off this review by saying saw this movie at the telluride film festival, and I loved it. not only that but I can safely that it was the fan fav. everyone I talked to said it was the best film they'd seen in a long time. So it not only me but everyone their liked it. it was a great movie. It was great for me who is a fan of both black and white movies. I am 14 and a movie nut so to see so many little nods, to great movies in there. and I have to say I loved the way that the film covered things like what it would have been like to have sound in movies as any actor. and I like how he is the artist, even if he just the actor. I feel that out of all of the films I saw at the film festival this one is going to win best picture. and why I think that is 1) it have very thing in it a good movies needs, it has heart, and it has a soul, it was made for the love of movies, it was was done and mixed the past and the golden days of film with the now not so golden days. 2) it makes making movies look easy, like anyone could make an Oscar winning film. and I feel that this film is makes movies look easy 3) it shows us what a movie really is. so if you are thinking about seeing it, just do it. it will be the best money you ever spend. and if not, you still saw it so you will not feel left out at the next dinner party because everyone else saw it and is talking about!
