  • gripping narrative underwater horror aesthetic

I can't fathom why this film has received such a low rating. After reflecting on it, I genuinely believe it's a remarkable movie. It's packed with suspense and crafts an immersive atmosphere that pulls you deep into the story. Julian Sands delivers a captivating yet understated and short performance, showcasing his talent effortlessly. While some might argue that two of the actors could have been replaced with stronger performers, this minor limitation doesn't justify undervaluing such a compelling and well-crafted thriller. Dialogue and plot links could be better as well, anyway the film deserves a much fairer score for its gripping narrative and evocative underwater horror aesthetic.

  • A Missed Opportunity Undermined by a Miscast Lead

This film is a heartbreaking case of wasted potential. The brilliant atmosphere, intelligent ideas, and stellar cinematography are all but drowned out by a lead performance that feels like a betrayal of the story's promise. A different casting choice might have elevated this film to greatness, but as it stands, it's a poignant reminder that even the most inspired projects can falter with one critical misstep.

The leading actress fails to embody the character's essence, delivering a performance that feels forced and unconvincing. It's a shame, as her inability to carry the role overshadows the film's many strengths, transforming what could have been a near-perfect cinematic gem into a frustratingly uneven experience.

  • The reasons it's a mediocre film...

Promising Young Woman falls short of its bold premise with a superficial treatment of its themes, uneven pacing, and glaring plot holes that undermine its impact. The film aims to tackle heavy topics like trauma and societal complicity but often reduces complex issues to simplistic, almost cartoonish revenge fantasies. Cassie's (Carey Mulligan) vigilante quest feels more performative than profound, with the script skimming the surface of her pain without delving into its psychological depths. This lack of depth makes her actions feel less like a coherent character arc and more like a series of contrived set pieces designed to shock rather than resonate.

The pacing is another major flaw. The first act drags with repetitive sequences of Cassie's nighttime stings, which quickly lose their novelty and slow the momentum. When the plot finally accelerates in the third act, it careens into an implausible climax that feels rushed and unearned. Key plot points-like the sudden reveal of certain characters' motivations or the convenient reappearance of others-come off as contrived, leaving gaping holes in logic. For instance, the film never adequately explains how Cassie sustains her lifestyle or why certain antagonists act in ways that defy basic self-preservation, creating a sense of narrative laziness.

Beyond this, the tone is wildly inconsistent, veering between dark comedy, thriller, and melodrama without committing to any. The candy-colored aesthetic and pop-heavy soundtrack clash jarringly with the grim subject matter, undercutting the film's attempt at gravitas. While Mulligan's performance is a standout, even her intensity can't salvage the script's tendency to prioritize style over substance. The supporting cast, including talented actors like Alison Brie and Connie Britton, are underutilized, reduced to one-dimensional caricatures that serve the plot rather than enrich it.

Ultimately, Promising Young Woman tries to be a provocative feminist statement but stumbles under its own weight, delivering a shallow narrative that mistakes shock value for insight. A more focused script, tighter pacing, and a willingness to engage deeply with its themes could have elevated it, but as it stands, it's a missed opportunity that leaves too many questions unanswered.
