It is always a pleasure when I stumble upon a little film with unknowns in every role both on screen and behind the camera, and the film delivers. Excellent visuals, a brooding musical score and power packed performances from actors soon to be discovered. The questioning of our own moral doctrine is what I took away the most. My wife and I spent nearly an hour discussing which of the two leads was in the right and whether their decisions we would make ourselves. Fascinating, independent American film that left us with much to ponder.
I've grown to really respect the independent film scene and the studios like A24 and Neon who put an emphasis on releasing such films. They shine a light ion stories and artists who might not get the exposure otherwise. With that in mind, I do think they are becoming a bit of a wholesale entity. What the heck was this? While I did get through the film and had a laugh or two, I really did not understand the utter randomness of much of what I saw. When did arbitrary become so trendy?
I rather love Chris Nolan's films but was disappointed with this one. It is still a spectacle to behold so hgih marks with the visuals. Hans Zimmer's scroe delivers as per usual but I felt this was a bit pap for my taste. The actor's performances carry the film through and while it is an enjoyable watch it ultimately let me down in the end given the bar Mr. Nolan has previously set.
