For anyone who likes to browse in antique shops and auctions looking for that unrecognised gem this is a great film for them. It's like a very early version of the much loved UK TV series "Lovejoy" which had high viewing figures, I've seen several episodes more than once. A very young Richard O'Sullivan played the younger version of the main character.
A great surprise to see a 1955 film in colour, although the colours faded in and out at times.
Full of interesting characters all ducking and diving in the antiques trade tying to make a living.
Well worth watching even for those not interested in antiques and bargain hunting.

I had expected this to be an action film but I was let down as it was much more of a soppy love story. Beautifully filmed and that counts towards it, but it was very slow and I would have preferred to have had less time to admire the scenery and more time to watch battle scenes.
It would be criticised these days for having so many white actors, "blacked up" to play Arabs but that's how it was back then. I did wonder where Arabs in the desert managed to have so many extravagant robes, for the men, and beautiful floaty dresses for the ladies.
Worth watching but excitement is missing for long periods of time.

I saw this as "Laxdale Hall" on TPTV in the UK. It is highly entertaining with a mostly convincing plot, the great Rikki Fulton had just one line which was delivered when he was in the poacher's car or van, Rikki and his wife left almost a million pounds to the RSSPCA has they had a great love of dogs.
The weather was typically Scottish with lots of rain, mostly horizontal, I hope that this didn't discourage tourists at the time. Prunella Scales did a great job of doing a Scottish accent.
Very much like a Scottish version of an Ealing comedy and every bit as good.
Well worth watching as it's very quirky and very Scottish, and very funny.
