blackjack432001-1's rating
This series of strange but true events in American History is awesome. I remember the headlines and the near daily coverage , nightly news, that covered the actual happenings way back in the early 70s. However, it was coming to us, the American public, in sections and somewhat difficult to understand , to make a cohesive judgement ... A break in...? At a Washington DC building..? Involving the then President Nixon? How and why remained a jumbled mess . While I would later read more about Watergate through articles and books, this series lays out the basics, does more in 45 minute segments than most before or since.... I'd recommend this to anyone whoever wanted to know just what the hell happened all those years ago and especially...why. By the way and as an extra added incentive, the actors who participated did a wonderful job, especially Sean Penn and Julia Roberts.... Their portrayal of the principal players, John and Martha Mitchell, were spot on...
I gave it a five star rating only because I was feeling generous. This movie begins with a fair beginning but as it progresses, it becomes more convoluted and extremely confusing....blink while watching and you might miss a key point or two...maybe...kind of hard to tell since we've got more villains in this one than supposed good guys....whoever thought this one up either never saw the earlier ones, or didn't care... I won't ruin any further what's already on screen , as some just might like it, but I will say this....when writing a script, telling a story, remember the KISS principle.... Keep It Simple, Stupid... The more cluttered, the more characters involved, usually the less enjoyable the plot.... One villian, his or her henchmen, and hero to save the day.... Since 1962, its worked rather well...until now.... Or I got a better idea.....retire Bond.... He and his minions are sixty years old....time to close that chapter....!
I must say, of all things you could say about this movie, one thing stands out ... JAWS did to the beach and summer crowd what PSYCHO did to showers...! You know you're on to something special when it has that affect on people....!
