Short Cuts was the most frustrating film to watch. I don't give a hoot about Altman's stance on showing sexism and misogyny as it is -- but there's a line that you don't cross and Altman leaps over it. This was one of the most cruel and bizarre films I've ever seen and here's the thing -- it's completely pointless. I mean, what are you doing, Bob! I tolerated the naked yoga girls in The Long Goodbye because well, they're supposed to be hippies. I was repulsed by the "does the carpet match the drapes" scene in MASH. McCabe & Mrs. Miller was a very good film, I must say, and so was Gosford Park, not because it wasn't sexist or misogynistic (which they were) but because the character arcs were well written and brilliantly executed. I love Gosford Park. This film annoyed me more and more and more... When filmgoers ask for realism, they don't want a putrid level of indifference. Short Cuts did not put me at ease one bit. It was an appaling film that just meanders here and there. Talk about glamorising abuse and neglect! Pfft! I wish I could erase this film from my memory.
There are very few filmmakers whose films have a command over you -- and whose style is easy to figure out but difficult to replicate. Robert Altman is one of those and he has only made GOAT films.
MASH, McCabe & Mrs. Millers, Nashville, Short Cuts, Player -- all belong in the 20th Century's list of Greatest Films. Gosford Park joins the 21st Century's list and is a fantastic tale written by Julian Fellowes - who would go on to create Downton Abbey. Let me just say that this film subtly fuses various genres and layers I came off disappointed with Downtown Abbey. In Altman's expert hands, this film is as incredible as it can be and I loved the plot twists and the greater meaning behind them.

Harrison Ford said it himself. The voicover lines were hammy and he delivered it in an uninspiring way because he hated the voiceovers and wanted it removed. Ford was also mad at Ridley Scott for being a tyrant onset. This film has suffered because of these issues and yet it is one of the best films of the 1980s. Imagine how good this movie could have been had the actors, crew, director and studio got along well.
This film also continues the "Harrison Ford gets to play an alpha male brute who will force the woman into loving him. It does give me an ick when Ford's character forces himself onto Sean Young's replicant.
