Bharat (2019)
Save your money, go watch any other movie - Alladin
I wish I had someone to give me the advise that I am stating here. Would have saved me some money and time.
Its without doubt that Bhai-ism is somethat that you cant miss. But when Bhai goes on a ride the likes of which we have seen so many times it is painstakingly annoying to sit throught it again.
Salman Khan really needs to pivot from the kind of cinema he can do. I actually believe that he can act ( at times). Problem again though is not the acting but the screenplay, the writing is pathetic, even when you have such an excellent source.
Go watch something else. You will have a better time than watching this movie.
Soni (2018)
The move holds a mirror to our faces and lets you decide what you want to do with what you saw
I really didnt like this movie for two reasons :
1. I wish there was more to this movie, the characters so engaging, the scenes so well shot, the small universe it creates, which is the reality many people live in, it is done so well. The dialogues if not poetic, were so surreal. They said so little and said all, the actors were brilliant and I look forward to seeing more of their work. Geetika Vidya Ohlyan is a force to be reckoned with, in the movie the character is the same.
Saying all that at the credits, i was like that's it? I need to know more about these characters and what happened to them. We have been so used to movies that have a beginning and an end that one a movie like Soni comes, you react the way I react.
2. The way it left me feeling at the end - which is something is very hard for me to describe.
The move holds a mirror to our faces and lets you decide what you want to do with what you saw.
Highly recommended. The Indian Cinemas that needs to be seen.
Arrival (2016)
This is not for everyone .. But its a brilliant Sci Fi Movie
There have been very few instance at the cinemas where the movie completely absorbs you.
This is one such movie. I am writing this review after watching the movie for the 3rd time. My appreciation for the movie has just increased more and more.
The direction, the acting, the screenplay, everything on point. The music score and bloody hell the hero of the movie was the cinematography. There were few shots in the movie which left you awestruck. Especially the first instance we see the alien ship, the shot of the Chinook, with the ship, the fog/cloud flowing down the mountains. It was spectacular.
A well rounded cast; Amy Adams was brilliant in her portrayal of a linguist.
Also they got the science right; or the hypothesized science right for this movie.
Overall a wonderful experience. Must watch.
Andhadhun (2018)
Bollywood can do this too ... Compelling, Funny, Dark and Brilliantly executed.
Everything that you have read and heard about the movie is true. This is definitely the best movie of the year and that too by a mile. The screenplay, the acting, the direction, everything come together to give you a thrilling cinematic experience and me as an audience were left just in awe.
The story is simple, it is a murder/ coverup and not a who done it story. But the manner in which the characters mingle and how the dynamics change is just a treat to watch. Its fun, dark and a subtle message about organ theft. All arranged effortless with great direction and editing. Ayushman Khurana is brilliant with his portrayal of his character Akash, Tabu as usual delivers a performance which you can only marvel at. The supporting cast does their bit too very well.
I really hope this movie does well in terms of entertaining ppl and as well as commercially as it can really define what else can come out of Bollywood. We don't need mindless entertainers, we need captivating stories which engrosses us for the 2 hours or more.
The audience will be discussing this movie for sometime especially because of the great "put the pieces together on your own" ending.
Go watch it.
Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran (2018)
Yet another case of brilliant plot, horrible execution
I will say I am very amused by the reviews of the movie. People I feel got swept away by the plot more than the movie, which is my point exactly in writing this review.
Pokhran was a great event to make a movie on. It showed how India became a nuclear power in arms and stood elite among the few nuclear powers. What the movie doesn't do is do justice with the horrible screen play. The plot established itself so haphazardly with Krishna's character, his motivation & his dream. Why no else but himself couldnt have done it nobody knows.
The overacting, to plot holes & the most absurd and horrendouz background score. Leave it to bollywood to push the limits of bad cinema.
After Madras cafe, which was brilliant in its own way, this was such a letdown.
My only positive take away is that Indians got to know about this historical event.
Comicstaan (2018)
High Hopes .. Came crashing down. A complete let down
Comicstaan has been the most hyped Amazon prime show so far. So much so that they seemed at battle with Sacred Games for promotion space.
Usually I enjoy pre release promotion period. One gets snippets of the what to expect, teasers are fun to watch. Amazon with Comicstaan went all out, to a point that it was irritating & one could sense the irritation among the hosts cum judges as well.
Keeping that aside, this is a review of the first 2 episodes, because I am cheap like that.
My problem with the show was primarily the judges itself, I never really took them seriously to able to judge the 10 contestants. Some of the contestants had great potential, others I kept wondering why he/she is on the show in the first place. Everyone gave high scores for no good reason, the critique was baseless & very general. Apart from Kanan & Tanmay, I didn't see much value added to the set they contestants performed.
I am not sure the thematic format helped the contestants either, most of the contestants that got selected had a great audition but the second studio episode, almost all dipped in performance because they were made to find the content and they seemed so out of place. The provide a platform as well as groom them as comic is definitely not well handled.
All in all very disappointed with the show, with the pool of amazing people involved, I definitely expected a better output.
P.S : Abish should stop hosting shows, he is terrible at it.
Biswa Kalyan Rath: Biswa Mast Aadmi (2017)
Skip this one. Biswa Mast Admi bante bante reh gaya
Needless to say, I was highly disappointed by the special. Knowing Biswa and following his stand up as well as his other work, I was really looking forward to this special; (more than Kanan Gills'). But half-way through it, I was like why is he even trying.
Forced jokes, producing forced laughter, funny at times, but never was a moment where I was laughing out loud. Didn't connect with his material at all, which was surprising because I thought I represented the audience that he catered to. Clearly not.
I hope his next special is much better.
Pirate Radio (2009)
"These are the best days of our lives , its a terrible thing to know "
"These are the best days of our lives , its a terrible thing to know" that just made the movie for me ....
I had been looking forward to this movie for a long time , with an all star cast and Rock N Roll , I wouldn't have dared to miss it. The movie was fantastic , critics have lashed out the length of the movie but I couldn't find one single dull moment all through out it. The characters were brilliant , from the count to Quintin , Gavin , all brilliant, the actors did a swell job. All I can say is Rent it , download it , buy it .. watch it. Also check out the soundtrack , which in its own right is awesome.
ROCk N ROLL B!!!
P.s : Talulah Riley looked amazing :)
Cheers.
The Brothers Bloom (2008)
A Breath Of Fresh Air
I have to say , this movie was certainly a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of the crap that has been coming out of the big production houses.
If your looking for a different movie all together , with a good story line , great acting and lovely music score ( composed by Nathan Johnson , its perfectly matches the essence being portrayed in the movie) , this is it.
Adrien Brody , Mark Ruffalo and Rachel Weiz are just amazing through out the movie . The chemistry between Brody and Ruffalo is certainly a high light of the movie , they don't look like brothers but throughout the movie you hardly notice. Rachel Weiz is as always amazing. Love her character.
Of course i cannot go away without mentioning Rinko Kikuchi as Bang Bang ,hardly any dialogues in the movie apart from a few one liners ,including "FUCK ME " ( you cannot miss it :P ) she definitely steals the show as the quirky mysterious sidekick .
I am writing this right after watching the movie so my rating as of now is definitely 9, a must watch if your tired of the usual movies hitting the screens.
Recommended.
