  • Above average but let down by the plot

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. The acting itself is phenomenal; both Park Ju-Hyun and Chae Jong-Hyeop do an excellent job as the main leads and have surprisingly good chemistry. Park Ji-Hyun also does well in portraying a dislikeable Joon-Young.

The subplots and character development do the series justice. Furthermore, the secondary couple Jung-Hwan/Yoo-Min completely steal the show with all their scenes.

My main issue with the series since the very beginning has been the amount of emotional abuse that Tae-Yang is being put through. This is being further exacerbated as most characters take it as normal and nobody steps in (whether this relates to the fictional or true reason behind Tae-Yang's bedminton break). I found this seriously disturbing to the point of making me question the realism that they're trying to portray.

Overall, it's definitely worth a watch but unfortunately I can at most give it 8/10 at a stretch.

  • Hilariously exaggerated rom com

I'll start by saying the plot doesn't bring anything original to the table. Now with that out of the way...

Everything from character development, makeup, typical clichés, romance, and the comedic scenes are exaggerated to such a degree that you cannot help yourself from laughing out loud. The show is pure entertainment and sometimes it makes you wonder whether it takes itself seriously. The smooth transition between plot development and outrageously funny scenes is nothing short of brilliant.

This goes on for the first 8 episodes or so. Once it transitions into the later stages it takes a sharp turn towards typical Korean rom com. Which isn't bad in itself but it did leave me sightly disappointed. It left me with the impression that it started incredibly strong and ended on a low note.

The chemistry between the couples is one of the show's strongest points. You can clearly tell they are extremely comfortable in each other's presence. The portrayal of both a conservative and libertine couple is also well done with ample screen time to develop both relationships.

I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for a light hearted romantic comedy with a unique sense of humour.

  • Underrated Masterpiece

This is without a doubt one of the best thriller dramas I have seen.

The script is absolutely brilliant and the first episode gives you the illusion of a slow start. However, this is done on purpose and once it puts its foot down, it does not stop until it explodes into a magnificent train wreck at the end.

Whatever could go wrong will go wrong. Extracurricular has a tendency to keep you on the edge of your seat, shouting at your screen with incredulity at some of the decisions the characters take. Then you remember they're high schoolers and not some criminal masterminds.

The acting is also top-notch and there is real chemistry and tension whenever Jisoo and Gyuri share screen time.

If you're looking for a thrilling drama that will keep you hooked to your screen, Extracurricular is definitely a solid choice.
