Was told this live-"action" remake from the Walt Disney company was going to surpass the expectations of all the doomers online. However, and I stress this heavily, this was not the "Feel-good" romance it advertised itself to be. It was more musically centered like a classical Disney production without all the childlike magic you might remember from the cassette days. I spent the majority of my watch time peering around the audiences for any sense of enjoyment or excitement, but nay, I could not. I caution all filmgoers to skip this abomination Disney execs call "Feel-good" and find a better production from a more homely studio.
Saw the preview for this opening night and immediately found a flood of suspicious activity on its IMDb page. Perfect scores make up Fifty-Three percent of the tallies on a primarily experimental exercise. This film experiments the rigging of social media avatars to the inception of general intelligence between two "smart-devices". Two AI have trouble separating social media clickbait from their base coding. The first instance being a buoy attempting to replicate the greeting from an "AI assistant" satellite. It's kind of cute listening to communicative coding attempt an introduction to a beautiful backdrop of star above vast ocean. However, the movie quickly devolves into a geriatric guessing game of how to manipulate visual charm to an audience. I don't think the screenwriter and director were ever in the same room because the script felt like a diary of a woman who has never had an original expression cross her mind when socializing. There's a glaring sophomoric gloss of how language is picked up, including understanding of colloquial humor in phrasing of speech. Cannot help but feel this was written by a student straight out of film school.
This Netflix installment into its "holiday collection" is one of the worst excuses for crime-thriller I have seen in a long while. I do not know how it pulled some of these well-known actors. From the very beginning, something feels off about the "American" accent from Egerton and his inability to prove how he snagged this "trophy wife" whom somehow manages LAX "airport operations". This director should never do another seasonal thriller that parades LAPD as the saviors of Christmas. I feel sorry for all Netflix customers who click on this because of how hard they push their featured originals. They will feel suckered in by its diversity in victims on this train-wreck narrative. I'm a seasoned watcher of contemporary cinema and it's a wonder this skit got so much funding. The only time I felt any sense of thrill was an over the top car accident that makes you forget what movie you're watching. Felt like a style-less version of Phone Booth that puts an aspiring law enforcer in a tough predicament of choosing loved ones over holiday travelers. Do not be fooled by the familiar faces...this is a cash-grab.
