How it happened?
Well, what happened very simply was that this show started on one of the more obscure BBC channels and then did very well via word of mouth, before having its harder more coarser edges well and truly sanded down, making its way onto BBC1.
It then went from being a rather dark comedy to being more of a comedy drama, and it's often forgotten that the 3rd series was seen as a bit of a drop in quality and that they were 'getting out while the going was good'.
Cut to 2019 and all this was forgotten. 19 million people watched the Christmas Special and another will surely match those numbers in 2024.
So, that's how it happened...

Hang on - do we?
I never said I loved it. Yes, it has funny moments but there's always an off-putting sense of darkness about it that always put me off. It's a bit like 'The Office', another show I'm sure Channel 5 in their infinite wisdom will do a 'We Love' show all about in the not so distant future.
I like this show in part, it has its moments, the 2019 Christmas Special was probably the episode I liked the most, but 'love' is a strong word, it's hard to say in real life, let alone about a rather bog standard show that seems to have been overhyped for many years.
Classic? No. 'Loved' No.
