Considering the talent they had on board, this could have been a decent movie, instead of an incoherent mess. As for what went wrong, I have a theory: There's this "plot processing machine" they use for the show "24" - hit this button, you get a plot point, hit another you get a car chase, a third, a scene where Kiefer Sutherland holds his gun in both hands and yells "Put down your weapon!" really loud. Well, someone left their 3-year-old in the room, banging away on the keyboard in no discernible pattern, mashing all the keys at once, hitting the same ones over and over. The result: this movie. It's possible that the stars all thought they were making a great picture, and that post production would bring it all together. Maybe they could have dropped one of the name starts and paid for some professional editing.
Movies like these are to the originals what Album Oriented Rock stations are to what music used to be like - repetitive, boring, and drained of all the original energy by a committee of corporate drones. I AM glad that Aragorn wasn't typecast as an expectant psycho by this P.O.S. Go back and watch the 1971 version, count the things that would NEVER be included in a modern version, and thank whatever deity you worship that someone somewhere in the distant past had the balls to write and shoot an original concept movie that wasn't based on someone else's ideas, and wasn't passed through a corporate board before it saw the light of day.
