  • Rob Marshall butchered this property.

Obviously had no clue how to handle this from stage to screen. Cast a wonderful actor in a part he couldn't carry. Day-Lewis is terrible in this part and I have no idea what accent he's trying to layer on. This show won both best musical in its original Broadway run and best revival of a musical for its remount, so what's the answer? Cut songs. There is no vitality or cinematic verve to the film. All in Guido's imagination, so have the women in his life aimlessly wandering around a soundstage in his fantasy sequences? He's supposed to be an amazing film director and that's what he sees in his mind's eye? I saw this in the cinema on opening day. Ugh. Years later, I tried to watch it again. Couldn't get past the first 10 minutes. Terrible, terrible, terrible.

  • Make it through to the end. SO worth it!

When I saw this film, in "Part 1" and "Part 2" format, in the cinema, I truly did not think I would return the following week for Part 2. All exposition, seemingly nothing happening. What a slog! Then, in the final moments of the film, question upon question is posed, with the invitation to see the same story from a different point of view - wait, what? I had to come back! I was then treated to three hours of pure payoff! Everything from Part 1 was answered in Part 2 and I had the most transformative film going experience yet. With the caveat that the first three hours are homework, I have only ever highly recommended this adaptation. Love it!
