Can We Carry On, Girls?

  • Excellent documentary on British comedy

One of the best things about this much very under-rated film is how it shows the influence of women in British comedy from Dilys Laye to Patsy Rowlands; Wendy Richards to Barbara Windsor; the late great Joan Sims to Shirley Eaton.

Director Paul Gallagher shows how these women were revolutionaries in comedy and their affect can be seen today in The League of Gentlemen to even Saturday Night Live; Absolutely Fabulous to French and Saunders.

So, why is this film so sadly overlooked? Are there still sexist big-wigs at the top of film comedy who sadly still believe women aren't funny???

Watch this documentary film and see how funny and how important the 'girls' of the Carry On films have been on world comedy!

    10/10 - unmissable!!

  • Superlative documentary about Carry On team

Dark, disturbing and hugely entertaining, this excellent documentary examines the lives of Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey and Frankie Howerd - three of whom were Carry On stalwarts, Howerd was more of a guest.

Very few documentaries get under the skin of their subject matter and Paul Gallagher has successfully unearthed the heart of each of James, Williams, Hawtrey & Howerd. All were driven by different demons which heightened their comic abilities.

A brilliant and fascinating documentary - a companion piece to Terry Johnson's equally good 'Cor Blimey!'

  • Brilliant study of comic genius

Brilliant study of comic genius Peter Cook and his relationship with Dudley Moore.

    Hilarious, disturbing and genuinely moving.

The performance from Rhys Ifans is one of the greatest ever given to celluloid and should clean up at the awards. At times it is difficult to remember that I was watching a drama and not a documentary - so credible is Ifans. I have never seen an actor give as convincing a performance where I actually believed I was watching Peter Cook rather than an actor playing him.

Likewise, Aidan McCardle is also very strong as Dudley Moore.

Terry Johnston's script and direction blends light and shade and is always imaginative.

An absolute gem of a movie.

    10 out of 10
