So far I've counted three people who gave this show a bad review that have terrible opinions of other shows and movies. One of them stated that Miyazaki's films are all the same and that all of his movies fail. You know, the director who won an Oscar for one of those "failed" movies. Anyway, that's the type of galaxy brained individual who thinks this show is bad. Take the opinion of anyone giving this show a bad review with a grain of salt.
Anyway, this is a charming, funny and touching show. It's very much slice of life, but after being fatigued by bombastic comic book nonsense, I welcome the simplicity. The characters feel like real people. They are likable, but with flaws that make them interesting. I decided to check this show out because I'm a fan of Taika's other show, What We Do in the Shadows, another show I adore.
If you're a fan of something that is funny and entertaining, but not too grandiose, I highly recommend checking it out.

I guess the director wanted to tell some sort of story to give motivation to why the kids did the killing, but it wasn't necessary. Remember how much more unnerving Michael Myers was when he had no motivation or reason for killing? And then how all that terror was thrown out the window when Rob Zombie came along and was like "actually it was because Michael had abusive redneck parents."
The same mistake happens here. In the original, the kids wreak havoc solely because of the influence of He Who Walks Behind the Rows. They kill for no reason, other than their victims are adults. Here, they are given motivation, thereby eliminating any real dread.
Also, I've never seen a group of characters with a startling lack of agency since Midsommer. The difference between this and Midsommer was that Midsommer actually felt like it had something to say about toxic relationships and coping mechanisms. The only thing I could glean from Children of the Corn was "GMOs bad" maybe?
I gave one star extra for some of the kills, and another because the little girl antagonist looked like she was having fun, but this one is easily skippable.
