I just got out of my most anticipated movie of the year, Superman.
This is spoiler free, but do not expect anything, like you have seen in a Superman movie, before!!
Urrrgghhh. This review is hard to write. As it is a lot to take in and I had a hard time getting into it, maybe half an hour or so, as it just drops you straight into it, and it's a very different world, to anything we have seen Superman in before. No build up, just straight in. Some people won't be able to get past it, as it's not our real world, well they have social media (a big plot point in the movie) It's not a world we know or can relate to. Social media
Think back to the first line in Superman The Movie Jor-El "This is no fantasy, no product of wild imagination" it grounds that movie in reality. This is the total opposite.
David Corenswet, does a good job, as does Nicholas Hoult and I have loved Rachel Brosnahan since I first seen House of Cards and Marvellous Mrs Maisel, but her Lois is a bit of a mess, the first half, she is very unlikeable and the second she is like a different character (it's as if they were from two different movies) it's not the actress's fault. It is the writing.. Krypto really works for me, that may depend if you have had a dog like that.
It goes so fast (faster than a speeding bullet) that when it finished, I actually thought it was a 90 minute, movie. I feel like this movie has lost 30 minutes or so, Where are the character moments?? There is a lack of Daily Planet scenes. Perry White is short changed, we actually get too much Jimmy Olsen. I did not care for his character at all. We don't even see much Clark.
The political commentary may upset some, but I didn't think it was that bad, I certainly don't think it is woke.
It's going to be divisive, as I think people will have a hard time with it. Snyder fans are going to hate it, people who don't like Gunn movies, will hate it, people who want it to be like the Donner movies, will hate it!!

I just watched Warfare on Amazon Prime. And WOW!!
Based on a true story and told in real time, about a platoon of Navy Seals (I think) on a mission in Iraq in 2006, this is hands down, one of the best movies of the year.
The biggest compliment I can give this movie is everything feels so real. The characters seem real, the relationships, seem real, the anxiety, tension and claustrophobia, certainly felt real. Something that really stood out was the bullets and explosions felt real. I hope this wins the Oscar for sound design (Not a category I normally pay attention, to). It's that good. I shudder to think, what this would have been like in 4DX
It is not non stop action, it's more character driven, but the tension is at 100% throughout. All the cast are great Will Poulter (an actor I have loved since Son of Rambow) and Joseph Quinn (Eddie from Stranger Things, A Quiet Place: Day One and Gladiator 2) and Michael Gandolfini (son of James) are the most recognisable faces. I have to single out D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, he is phenomenal. This could be a situation like The Outsiders, where decades later people look at that cast and say 'imagine how much it would cost, to get them in a movie, now?' I feel bad not mentioning more cast. As they are all amazing.
It is deliberately paced, the opening 20/30 minutes set the tone and atmosphere and at only 90 minutes it is a great, intense watch that does not shy away from the horror of war.
Where was the chatter about this movie?? I'd never even heard of it, let alone seen a trailer (someone dropped the ball, here).
This is co written and directed by Iraq war veteran Ray Mendoza, who was on this mission.
I am that drained, I need to watch a sitcom or rom/com to sooth myself, but I will be buying this and it will be in my Top 10 of the year.
