The musical accompaniment lets you know this is a state of nature - that the depicted humans and their rebellious creations are red in tooth and claw - even as it underlines their mutual search for meaning and purpose in the black void of the universe.
The realism of the "documentary-style" shots is buttressed by the minimal (but not non-existent) noises attributed to the spacecraft in the "airless void of space". (N.B. One possible explanation for what sound remains, besides the gun sounds transmitted through the bodies of the Vipers to the cockpit radios, is the USAF concept of giving audible warnings of threats on radar through stereo headphones, seemingly from the direction of the threat.) I wonder how well we would truly respond to the immediate threat of human extinction? BSG has an ensemble cast in the best sense of the phrase, and they portray the glory of humanity in our darkest hours.
