I didn't like the first 2 episodes. They were dull and the jokes absolutely didn't work for me. Couldn't believe why others in IMDb are praising these two episodes. I would have slept for an hour if not for the fast forward option. Don't really understand why this show was created. I'm watching this only because it connects to Dr. Strange 2. Otherwise would have skipped this. There's no hope that the coming episodes will be good. Well they all say there's only one way when you have it rock bottom. Up.
Edit: The story starts from 4th episode and it's interesting. Makes you wonder why the hell they made the first 3 episodes when they could have started right from 4th episode.
Firstly this is one of the most underrated anime I have ever come across. Not even the anime blogs that I follow have mentioned about this gem. It might be that since the main lead is a Shogi player and the game is not that popular across the world. But don't let that obstruct you from having a go at this.
There are 2 seasons released as of now and the story is still running in the Manga.
The 1st season starts off the story introducing us with wide variety of characters, all pretty well structured. We gradually get to know the past and present of Rei Kiriyama and his struggles to lead a life as a pro Shogi player. His relationship with the three Kawamoto sisters are thing to gaze upon.
The 2nd season gets deeply into the lives of all the characters and shows how each are overcoming their difficulties to lead a happy life. Especially Hinata's story is the most gripping one as she encounters hardships at school.
The dialogues are outstanding in this anime. I would suggest to watch the English dubbed version. They have done a wonderful job in retaining the core emotions in every scene.
Overall this anime sure comes into my top 5 favourite anime of all time.
1. Plot: It's a story set in between two world wars, about a man who rises above all his obstacles to form a powerful gangster family in England.
2. Acting: The cast overall has a unit brings out the best in them with standout performance from Cillian Murphy (Thomas Shelby).
(can't believe he has not received a Emmy for this role)
3. Cinematography: Visuals are a piece of artwork with stunning backgrounds that capture old age England.
(Slow-motion shoots are a thing to watch)
4. Character Development: The show comes second best to Breaking Bad in terms of Character Development (which is a great feat by itself). The characters of the Shelby family grow beyond hardships to narrate us a gripping story along with the main character.
5. Music: All the above mentioned points are taken to new heights by the Background Scores. Theme music (Red Right Hand) sets you up to the tone of the show.
