10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
Cool and surprising
I was super curious to see this movie as I am a huge fan of the movie Cloverfield. By mistake I thought that this would be a sequel - and I had already heard all kinds of rumors about what "Cloverfield 2" might be about.
What I got was different - but still pretty cool. The beginning pulls you right in, everything is just very intense and confusing - just as it would be if you were in the protagonist's shoes.
Speaking of the protagonists: I was extremely impressed by the understated way Mary Elizabeth Winstead carried the movie, and
I have to admit that though I'm not a John Goodman fan by any stretch of the imagination, he worked out great as prepper Howard, probably better than anybody else could, because his more than solid physique makes him appear as a broken man as well as intimidating at the same time.
The tension in this movie never lets up, not for a minute, and without wanting to spoil anything: The teasers are very adequate in preparing you for what this movie has in store - and then some!
UFO: It Is Here (2016)
Fun alien movie
When you go to see a German horror flic, your expectations are pretty low. It seems that movies coming out of Germany are for the most part comedies (that don't necessarily translate too well) or drama with a deeper message.
UFO certainly doesn't reinvent anything, it leans rather heavily on the classics of the genre such as The Blair Witch Project or Alien - nonetheless I was positively surprised.
The actors did a good job making their panicked reactions believable and there's quite a few things to panic about in the course of events: This is not a found footage film that leaves everything to the viewers imagination - instead, there's a good amount of gore here and the creature effects are rather convincing.
Cheaply produced, no doubt - but there's some fun to be had especially for fans of found footage movies.
Paranormal Activity (2007)
Sleepless nights
I almost feel guilty about giving a 10 especially for a low-budget movie, but the world knows by now: This movie delivered all there is to be delivered in the horror genre.
Or actually: like most horror movies there's a big divide here in the audience - it always seems to be even bigger when it comes to the so called found footage movies.
I can hardly believe that a 6,3 is all this movie got on IMDb. But I guess that's just it: A lot of viewers don't get anything at all out of a movie that was cheaply produced and doesn't have a lot of special effects, gore or monsters.
Then there are the others like me: In the back of my head I seem to believe in demons, because this movie left me with the deep conviction that I'm not safe in my own house and in my own bed anymore. I didn't sleep well for a number of nights after having seen it. That's all I have to say because most of the rest there is to be said about this film is common knowledge. Don't trust anybody who says it was boring: See and decide for yourself.
As Above, So Below (2014)
Worth seeing!
I didn't see the movie until recently - when it originally came out I didn't want to spend the money on a movie ticket because I thought that it would just be so much fluff.
Now recently I had the chance to see it on DVD and I must say I stand corrected, at least in part.
I don't want to spoil anything here, but I must say that the idea was very original and I definitely appreciated the nods to a certain medieval Italian writer.
The characters were likable enough and the direction the movies pushes into pulls you in as a viewer. Creatures and jumpscares definitely worked. What I like most about movies like this one: It creates a world that is unreal but still believable and the viewer can get lost in it. It definitely triggered my imagination and made me think more about that universe that was created here.
Why only 6 stars then? The main reason must be the ending, because that was a big disappointment to me as I expected something much more radical. But still - it's worth a view for every fan of the genre and even for those who aren't.
The Office (2001)
As good as it gets
When I first saw the shows it was almost a shock to me. Funniest, most brilliant series. Ricky Gervais proves to be an absolute genius right from his very first production! Everything little thing is perfect here: the writing, the cast, even the music. British humor at its driest and wisest! Especially nowadays in an age of Big-Bang- and Two-and-a-half-inaneness, I can so appreciate these classics.
Giving 10 out of 10 is easy here because I honestly can't imagine what they could have done better. The characters are so spot on.
It's effortless and intelligent. It's just humor at its very, very best.
