CODA offers a sweet and original take on the coming-of-age story through the eyes of a hearing young woman with dreams of being a singer; her challenge is that the rest of her family is deaf, and she both feels responsible for them and fears leaving them behind.
Structurally, it reminded me of Billy Elliot, another film about a child wanting to pursue a career in the arts that will inevitably separate them from their working-class family. And like Billy Elliot, it has enough humor and authenticity about the community it portrays to make its classic story arc feel satisfying and fresh.
It's an emotional button-pusher, but the characters felt original and the specifics of the family dynamics were drawn beautifully, including the older brother character who got frustrated by his younger sister's role as "martyr" to the family. These kind of specifics, along with really solid acting, elevated the film from just being a "crowd-pleaser" into something more satisfying.
