Hell's Caretaker (2013)
Don't be turned off by the one star reviews.
There's enough good dialogue, suspense, attractive twenty somethings and plot to make this a fairly good movie to get you through a lonely night. I enjoyed it. Yes, the movie has clearly defined failings but that doesn't mean it should be dismissed outright. I think that is a succinct and fair review so could a bunch of people appeal IMDB's decision that forces reviewers to write a bunch of additional nonsense just so that their reviews can be published. Again, I enjoyed watching the movie, but there could have been additional plot points and character development to make it more believable. That it was lacking in this doesn't necessarily make it a 1 star movie.
Toothfairy 5 (2022)
I'm not quite sure what angers me more ....
... that I wasted my time watching this stupid movie or knowing that people were paid good money to write the ridiculous script and direct it. I can't fault the actors because they all did a decent job but the script is a parody of horror movies. A school where no phones are working. You can hide behind a toy theater's red gingham curtain and no one will see you. A mass murderer is on the loose and a single police constable shows up for the duration of the film. A mass murderer is behind you and you'll keep trying to unlock a door which definitely won't open instead f running for your life or picking up a chair to defend yourself. This movie is a nightmare ... and not in the fun nightmare way that scares the heck out of us.
Attack of the Puppet People (1958)
If there is one film .....
... that need to be deconstructed as a psycho-sexual drama, this is the one. Excellent sci-fi, a star of that era, but you really need to wonder, no analyze, exactly what was going on inside the head of the story's author. In my mind's eye, something very scary and strange, indeed! John Hoyt is the superior actor and he had a long and rewarding career. John Agar seems wasted here and June Kenney is horribly miscast. Of course, decades later, what difference does it make? From my humble perspective, the highlight of the film was the cat in the matchbox! A good assembly of cast for the puppet people. It's a fun film to watch if you can cast off the disturbing undertones.
The Rocking Horse Winner (1949)
A good movie, not excellent.
The star of the film is the lad, followed by the Uncle. The connection between the horse and Paul is never crystal clear so we are asked to suspend our disbelief and accept that the horse is giving Paul the future winners' names. The husband is the worse, just a completely obnoxious character. Mom loses a few rounds but comes around in the end to show her to be a caring sort. If Bassett doesn't stick the "ill-gotten" wins in his pocket as he quits at the end, then all my faith in humanity is lost. It's not a bad film; I just think that it could have been done better in the hands of someone like Rod Serling.
Red Pill (2021)
A 2022 "1984"
An allegory sprung from contemporary culture and politics n the U. S. Poor acting, poor plot development, plot holes galore. To rate this a 10 is to do a disservice to filmmakers everywhere. Yes, it's interesting. But I am betting the majority of viewers will have forgotten this film in a day or two after having watched it. Nothing stands out and there is plenty that doesn't make sense. I'm sure the budget for this film was on the very low end and it shows from the beginning to end. The premise is terrific but it could have been developed into something much more cohesive and satisfying. I have to wonder how many of the ten star reviews are coming from the film makers and their friends, as well as employees.
Tales from the Crypt: Came the Dawn (1993)
One of the best ones ...
Another gender bending, Norman Bates kind of tale where the right villain gets beheaded. My momma always said, "Look out for the rich ones. They're the most demented." Didn't even recognize B. Shields (watched this in 2022). Perry King, best jawline ever! Spooky, zig=zaggy tale of a boy meets girl, momma kills girl. I've watched most of Crypt and in my opinion, this was a superlative episode. This series DEFINITELY needs to be reintroduced to a different, wider audience today. Who wants to take up the mantel??? I think it would be hugely successful considering the poor outcrop of horror today.
The Alienist (2018)
I am not overwhelmed by most of the acting here ....
... least Monsieur Bruhl's (who I actually consider a fine actor). But the accolades must go to Grace Zebreskie, who did a phenomenal job as Mrs. Ross in the Seinfeld series and she even further (if that is necessary) proves her acting chops here. A warm and wonderful actress!!! This review is submitted only after having seen Season One. Dakota Fanning. Does she have any other look besides glassy-eyed? It's an entertaining series. I'm currently in Morocco which isn't showing Babylon Berlin, but I saw most of the series in the U. S. and I notice a fairly large amount of stylistic similarities, especially in the music. Would be interest in finding out which was filmed first.
Escape Room (2019)
Smart and clever, but ....
The idea that there is any cabal controlling us or the direction of society is ridiculous. The earth is simply too large. We're talking about 8 billion people. Yes, maybe the Bezos, Musks and Soros's could kidnap and play these kinds of games on a small group of their "employees"? ... or in the worst of circumstances their critics, but can you even imagine the costs involved in searching out and plotting against a group of people who may, simply, have erred in life. Definitely not a wealth preserver which in my mind is at the forefront of their minds. A fun piece of imagination, but no where near the land of reality.
Tales from the Crypt: Three's a Crowd (1990)
You are really manipulated by the writers here.
Who WOULDNT think those two were having an affair? The single key to a successful relationship is communication; something she fails miserably at. The "twist" was completely expected. The only good thing in this episode was Gerlihy's acting, sadly he has passed.
The Outer Limits: Vanishing Act (1996)
Surprisingly, a superlative piece of science fiction.
One of the best of all time. Cryer is amazing in his role. Dean McDermott is so handsome as a young man. This i science fiction that forces you to THINK. The best kind.
Sparks (2013)
So much better than the garbage out of Hollywood in 2022.
I adored this movie. So down to earth, authentic, real. I would have given it 9 if it weren't for some choppiness and continuity errors. Ten years later, the lead actor hasn't the same career arc as say a Brad Pitt ... but, believe me, he's ten times better.
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
I weep for the history of American film.
I weep, absolutely weep that this piece of sheer garbage receives a 7.2 on IMDB. What the holy hades has happened to American film. The performances, with the exception of John Gallagher, are NOTHING! The plot, story line, foreshadowing are all that only the laziest writers who have no vested interest in anything could vomit out. Honestly, as a 65 year old, long time film buff, this is pure garbage.
War of the Worlds (2005)
The true story of Tom Cruise.
Just one in a long string of films that painted (laughably) Cruise as a hypermasculine male when the reality is that he's psychologically denied his sexuality for decades and hidden in the skirts of Scientology, one can only imagine hoping for a cure. For all his wealth and fame, J"accuse Mr. Cruise of being one of the least authentic human beings of this century.
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
An honest review of this film.
John Krasinski and Emily Blunt couldn't act their way out of a paper bag. Cillian Murphy and Noah Jube managed to salvage the latest piece of monster porn with their amazing acting. PLEASE, don't do A Quiet Place III. You have neither the skills nor talent to pull it off.
Blood Red Sky (2021)
I completely enjoyed this movie ..............
BUT .... do transatlantic flights really carry morphine on board? And why did the doctor pop up so late in the film? The lad is the best part of the film.
Bumperkleef (2019)
Could there be anymore of a stupider movie than this?
This has to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Every character makes completely illogical decisions. Not a single protaganist grabs any kind of weapon to defend themselves. The wife's driving is farcical. It's not watchable and it's not entertaining.
Frontière(s) (2007)
One of the best horror films ever made ....
There is excellent horror which can edge into too much horror. The Exorcist is excellent horror; this film veers into too much horror. But, nonetheless, it is an excellently constructed film which will haunt you for some period of time. I won't give kudos to one actor because each and everyone did just a phenomenal job. The script is amazing. At one point, maybe 3/4 through the film, my film critic mind was saying, "OK, this is a good place to end it.", only to have my senses assaulted by even more terror towards the end. For me, the highlight of the film is when the lead actress faces her final tormentor. I've asked myself before how far would you go to stop an assault on your person and her choice mimics mine. The only thing I didn't like was the ending; the roadblock didn't make sense. Otherwise, I give this film some really high accolades and wonder why it took me 15 years to find it. Thank you, Shudder!
Halloween Kills (2021)
This s as bad as bad horror movies can get ...
Sorry, but this is a piece of garbage. A wasted piece of film. All those salaries and production costs wasted. Just sheer nonsense on a colossal scale. Whomever came up with this should be banished to working at Wendy's. And, no ........... I didn't enjoy it. Not even one single redeeming factor.
La La Land (2016)
Just tragic .....
This never should have been a musical. Assuming the director and writers have no talent in presenting an artistic and creative drama scene. While I welcome the show of youthful exuberance, please don't shove it down our throats. You might not realize, we were all there once. Emma Watson doesn't hold a candle to Amanda Seyfreid. Ryan Gosling, thank you for your learning piano (at least that's what the Hollywood PR machine says and we know how they are). But blowing your own horn on your first (RETURN!) night on the job ..... what did you expect. This movie was an abject failure and the furthest thing from a cinematic success.
Ugetsu monogatari (1953)
Addresses the human condition .........
........ in the most poetic of ways. All of the themes layed out can be seen in every generation. The supernatural aspects of this story only add to its charm. Really, quite a remarkable masterpiece.
Antlers (2021)
Quite good horror flick ... better than Hereditary
Excellent pacing, tight script, not without several flaws. Keri Russell and the two boys earned every single penny they were paid for making this film. The ending was done for a sequel but entirely unnecessary and slightly damaged the film IMHO.
House (1985)
Much more fun in 2022!!!
This was a well written, well conceived horror-comedy that literally shines in 2022. William Katt is 100% on the mark as the Viet vet, now writer who lost his son in a tragedy. George Wendt and Kay Lenz are meh but there is a lot of fun in this movie and a joy to watch over 35 years later!
Deadly Promises (2021)
No, this is garbage.
A freshman in high school could have made a better film. Lord have mercy! Just because there's a cute boy in the film doesn't qualify it to be anything more than sub-par mediocrity featuring a cute boy.
The Cleaning Lady (2018)
My HONEST review of The Cleaning Lady!
A brilliant premise. An excellent leading actress. A fine ensemble of supporting actors. What started as a multi-faceted thriller/horror film quickly devolved into torture porn at the mid point. I recommend John Knautz and Alexis Kendra start practicing, "Do you want fries with that?" which in my opinion is the only suitable profession for both of them.
Don't Look Up (2021)
2021 politicized "Armageddon"
Very sad farce "end of world" movie. Every single actor is far below their game. ENDLESS end credits ... I don't need to know who the Texture Lead is; I'm sure they got a fair paycheck for their work. Poorly written, just a VERY few shining moments like Leo's final soliloquy on the Bree and Idiot show and pan shots of world citizens as comet nears earth. I can only imagine the entire crew, actors and staff, thought they were phat .... CLUE: you definitely were not.
