The Greatest Showman (2017)
A mediocre, forgettable film!
The Greatest Showman, directed by Michael Gracey, is a star-studded musical which blesses our eyes with Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya
The movie starts with the character of Hugh Jackman, P.T Barnum, as a poor child who dreams of making it big to marry the girl of his dreams, Charity - the daughter of the man that he works for
As it progresses, we see P.T marry Charity and have two wonderful daughters all the while trying to make it big to prove Charity's father that he's a husband worthy of having. P.T has an idea of opening a museum, which fails but her daughters suggest that his museum needs more life and "alive" things. So, P.T auditions for people with unique characteristics that will attract audiences and sees his museum transform into a circus.
Now there are some technical and narrative problems in the overall film. To begin with, there is a clear lack of depth in plot and story. For instance, the film ditches exploring various characters' lives. For instance, it barely skims over the main plot points to give us a summarised, not to mention historically inaccurate, view of P.T Barnum's life. So what could have been an adventure of a film, the writers instead chose to make it appeal to a mass-audience and in the process gave us a hardly memoriable story.
Secondly, I can't help but say it, that the movie uses its songs only to tighten it grip on the audiences' attention. The musical numbers were forgettable, loud and for the most part glossy. Although, the choreography was decent if not brilliant.
The fact that most of the acting performances were too sweet-mouthed and cringy also never helped TGS's cause. Zac Efron managed to shine, Zendaya as well, but Hugh Jackman gave a very ordinary performance and relied on his star power for the most part. Most dialogues were melodramatic and the presence of the extras struggled to contribute to the feel-goody nature of the film. The screenplay had some cliched plot points: a love triangle; the rise, fall and eventual rise of P.T Barnum. The predictability created disinterest and caused the film to fall flat on its wheels by the time the painfully long third act even began.
Housefull 3 (2016)
One of the worst comedies India has produced.
I'm an avid lover of Indian movies, especially comedies. I always find myself exploring more and more films. India has produced some great comedies: Hera Pheri, Phir Hera Pheri, Dhol, Dhamaal, Deewane Huye Pagal, Hungama, and the list can go on. On the other side of this however, the writer duo Sajid-Farhad has done its best to write screenplays for the worst Indian comedies ever. Housefull 3 is a film full of childish jokes and gags. It has a ridiculous plot, a no-brainer story, and it tries extremely hard to be funny, but not one time does it try to be good. Two of the male lead has a disability. Sandy becomes 'Sundy' whenever he hears the word 'Indian', and this is as cringe-worthy as it sounds. Ritesh's character mispronounces some words, for example 'Dolat' and 'Aurat'. The female leads do literal translations of English sentences and this ends up confusing the other characters in the film, and makes me want to tear my eyes out. There was no sense of direction in this film. The film is directed by Sajid-Farhad Samji, who wrote the first garbage that came to their minds, and said 'Hey, let's turn this into a film'. I am surprised no one tried to stop them. Every actor was doing his/her whole thing, there was no sense of coordination. The acting was beautifully terrible. The lead actors are at least 10-15 years older than the lead actresses, and every actor was cast because of their looks and their fan-following. None of the lead actresses can act, I mean in the whole film all I could see Nargis Fakhri do was bend up and down trying to explain stuff either to her dad, or her boyfriend with her perky lips meanwhile Jaqueline was busy showing her thighs. This is Akshay's worst performance I have seen and I have seen the best and worst of him. He didn't even try. It's like every crew member was concerned with his/her paycheck. And let's face it, Abishek and Ritesh could never act. Meanwhile I don't know what hit Boman Irani's head throughout the whole film. The cinematography was okay. It captured the beauty of the locations, but didn't even try to do something special. The dialogue was absolutely crap. The screenplay was genuinely horrible. The characters are unbelievable, their stories are unbelievable, and the jokes aren't funny, except if you're a 5 year old. On one side of Indian comedies is Neeraj Vora, and on the other far side, we have this duo that has swore to never even try to make something genuine. Most of the film's core problems lie in its screenplay. People really need to get their heads together, and start valuing the great films and bashing films like these, because if a film like Housefull 2 can get a third installment, meanwhile Hera Pheri 3 rests on the bookshelf, then I don't really see Indian comedies going anywhere.
Batman: The Killing Joke (2016)
It was okay-ish
Okay to start off I had been waiting for this movie since the news came out last year. This was probably my most awaited film this year and turned out to be the biggest disappointment. So the film is 1hr:16min long, which is a very good length, but the first 28 minutes, were almost unrelated, unconnected to the rest of the film. Maybe they wanted to add more depth to the character of Barbara Gordon, and show her relationship with Batman, but in reality to extend the runtime from 44mins. So they have sex, yep. Also the scene is totally unexpected. Also, my MAIN CONCERN is with the character Paris Francesco. At first I thought he might be our Joker in this film and somehow this film isn't hanging in with the comics. A sociopath, talks a lot, has eyebrows and a long face like the Joker, a wide grin. But then for the rest of the film he disappears. His character was the most pointless characters I have ever seen in an animated Batman film. Moving on, the story wasn't great but the script was even worse. I mean the dialogue felt forces, some lines were added only to fill the film quota. The music was okay, the direction was...mehh okay. The characters could have been voiced with more realism. The Animation sucked though. The one thing I sort of liked about this film was the ending, it was a bit of a cliffhanger, though it is different from the comics. The ending saves me from giving this film a 3 tbh.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
A bad return to the Star Wars Franchise
I'd like to start off by saying that this movie had a lot of good things and bad things about it. I'd rank it 4th in the series of my favourites (6, 4, 5, 7, 3, 2, 1). It tried to look like the 4th Episode, but was absolutely incomparable to it, and the attempt at making it look like that, was awful and a pathetic idea.
Good things: 1. Great Action Sequences. We see that the movie has absolutely NAILED it in terms of action. With the Millennium Falcon, and the light saber fights, and the explosions, absolutely seemed like I was there, because of the 3D. 2. Finally, no hate-able character. All the new characters introduced were well on their place. Finn, Poe Dameron, Rey, BB-8, were extremely good characters, and every actor did their role best, and had no overacting like Hayden's and Jake Lloyd's in the prequel trilogy, and the hateable character being Jar Jar, and Queen Amidala. 3. The comedy is back! Even though it isn't the nitty gritty comedy of the Original trilogy, but it's strong and funny on its own ground. I loved it! 4. Han Solo, Leia, and Luke are back. Our favourite characters from the original trilogy.
BAD Things: 1. Action was so good, but too much action I feel. I felt that every second in the cinema was just explosions, fights and nothing else. The movie didn't have the lightness that the original trilogy did. 2. They did introduce new characters, but there was no setup, build up to these characters. Rey just became a Jedi, used the force better than the great Luke, at her first try. 3. Why is the whole movie just a mystery of the origins of Rey, JJ Abrams? In this whole movie, we are given hints of who Rey might be. We are hella confused at if she was Han's daughter, or Luke's, or who's?!?! 4. Please don't tell me Finn is the son of Lando Calrissian and Princess Leia! Thought these are theories, but why haven't we been given his origins and details. 5. If you really were to copy the original trilogy, we should have been given a lot more R2-D2 and 3PO. 6. You killed one of our main favourite characters. HAN SOLO, just dies. 7. Only 60 seconds of Luke Skywalker at the end? If you are trying to copy the first episode, where Leia gets kidnapped, we at least got a bit of Leia, whereas Luke was there only for like 60 seconds. 8. The Villains are not really villains. Kylo Ren should have been more like Darth Vader, "finish what he started", but is rather in competition with General Hux. 9. Supreme Leader Snoke is not very supreme.
So I'll rate it for you guys. +4 for the good stuff about the movie, and -9 for the bad. Total rating = 10. 10 + 4 = 14 14 - 9 = 5
There you go. Hope this review helps! =)
Ted 2 (2015)
A Very Funny Movie worth watching!
In the whole of 2015, I was dying to see a good comedy. I came across movies such as Trainwreck or Wedding Ringer, Or Get Hard, but none of these movies were as appealing as Ted 2. This review is honest, that in most parts of the movie it was funny as hell. The jokes are fresh and very different from that of Ted 1, and in fact I think it has a better ending than Ted 1 too. On the other hand, it is a little more serious than Ted 1, nevertheless, the humor of the movie is maintained throughout, which is the purpose of a comedy. This gave me as much laughs as Ted 1 did, and MacFarlane successfully delivers a comedy different and much better than the others.
In conclusion, I think you should absolutely watch it and you will have a good time, unless you're a boring a** person who loves to criticize the hell out of things. This movie is highly underrated, and even though I'm a man who hates comedies, and I didn't like Ted 1 much, though I loved The Hangover 1(1 only) and Borat(Not the Dictator), I highly recommend you watch it, and have a good laugh.
Prisoners (2013)
Though it was filled with suspense, it was itself quite a disappointment!
People might say this movie was one of the greatest movies of 2013. I would strongly disagree. Jake Gyllenhall and Hugh Jackman were amazing. In fact all the actors were amazing but these two killed it. The movie, according to me, had lots more potential, could have been one of the best mystery movies EVER made, but much of the movie still remained a mystery. Questions like, why the child was kidnapped, what happened to Hugh Jackman afterwards, were still left unanswered after the movie ended. It needed answers, and this is why the ending was sad too. The movie was very long and I wouldn't have mind watching another half hour for these answers. It did build up lots of suspense, but I also feel that they added parts that had no need to be in the film, just over elongated the film. Nevertheless, I would still recommend you watch it, but don't expect too much.
The Danish Girl (2015)
No Oscars for Eddie in my opinion
In this spoiler-free review, I hate to say this, that the only little good thing about this movie was Eddie's performance which made the movie a little better. BUT DO NOT GO WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS movie. Movie clearly lacks a sense of writing and horrible direction. But I tell you you can save the money for a real movie in a few days, like Star Wars VII, or The Revenant. This movie was absolutely entirely horrible. I went to the cinema very excited like I should have been, wondering if the new Eddie Redmayne movie will be better than his previous one(The Theory of Everything), which was a great masterpiece! But the movie was tedious and boring all through out the hours, no excitement and Eddie was clearly not as good as he was in his previous movie, but he was good enough to make me at least RATE this movie a one star.
