A perfectly decent drama (that I didn't know was a sequel at first) carried by solid performances from leads Samuel Hunt and especially Merritt Patterson who is especially captivating to watch. Path to Redemption handles its subject with understated care and it's rare to see an American production stay the course and not devolve into schmaltz and melodrama. Films like this deserve more recognition. I'm glad I spent time with this one.
I've noticed an alarming drop in the quality of this show since the departure of Douglas Henshall at the end of Season 7. Bringing Ashley Jensen in as the new DI alongside Alison O'Donnell's 'Tosh' was a mistake & I think they should have elevated Steven Robertson's 'Sandy' instead. Jensen's DI Ruth Calder has an abrasive quality which has worsened throughout Seasons 8 & 9. The writing quality has also deteriorated since the departure of Henshall to the point where a lot of the scenes are woefully contrived, the characters don't act in the way they have in the past and the dialogue is way too obvious. Character interactions are no longer intuitive and they don't seem natural. Shetland has become a disappointment.
I've thoroughly enjoyed The Rig from the outset. It has twisted and turned throughout its two seasons providing solid action, mystery and compelling supernatural narrative elements that recall Alien, The Abyss, The Sphere and Event Horizon (without the gore).
Performances have been largely top notch - led by the always reliable Iain Glen, Martin Compston. Rochenda Sandall & a brilliant Owen Teale. Some of the secondary characters put in some great performances. I did feel that Emily Hampshire was miscast in the role of Rose.
Production was generally good although I felt Season 2's sets didn't quite reach the level of Season 1. At times, it felt a little too clean and the Arctic setting warranted a much "bigger" environment. That said, I still found it immersive enough to buy into it.
The Rig is a solid piece of entertainment and it's refreshing to see a UK production punching above its weight to deliver something a little different.
I liked The Rig a lot.
