Ever since I saw the trailer for Weapons, I had high expectations for the film. The premise of several children disappearing in the early hours of the morning, responding to a mysterious call, is a powerful and very intriguing one.
The film lives up to all expectations and more. The script is impeccable, stitched with intelligence, precision, and imagination.
Without hesitation, I can say it's one of the best horror films I've seen this decade. It surprises even seasoned moviegoers at every turn. The unpredictable plot captivates and keeps the viewer attentive to the smallest detail.
A determining factor in its impact is the narrative structure. It presents a parallel structure in which we see the disappearance from the perspective of six key characters: the elementary school teacher from the classroom from which the children disappear; a father desperate for the sudden loss of his little one; a county policeman with a phobia of needles and a drinking problem; and a young drug addict who robs houses to support his habit. The elementary school principal and, finally, the only child in the class who didn't disappear.
This way of telling the story is stimulating for the viewer because at some point, the storylines of each character connect in the third act, which is devastating and keeps you guessing.
The villain is memorable. A seemingly sweet and fragile person who subtly displays all the evil she carries within.
An extraordinary film that reiterates that horror films often offer the best plots and, also, that it's the genre that takes the most risks when it comes to telling a story.
