Staying alive was harder than you think in the 1970's, but somehow most of us did survive and are tougher for it.

Writer/Director Stephan Elliot ("Priscilla Queen of the Desert") knows this better than most and he successfully captures that vibe in his mostly autobiographical 2018 movie "Swinging Safari" narrated by Richard Roxburgh ("Rake").

This film reflects all that was good, bad and downright disturbingly stupid about the era that was Australia in a time when Gough Whitlam was Prime Minister, "cracker night" or "Guy Fawkes Night" was still legal, along with backyard bonfires and flammable children.

Yes we've learnt from our mistakes since then and we don't recommend sending in a demolition team to remove a beached whale or wearing polyester clothing near a fire place.

Queenslanders will recognise some of the locations including Snapper Rocks/Rainbow Bay on the Gold Coast where the movies Mayor (Jack Thompson) joins a long list of Aussie Superstar actors and actresses who've had huge international film, tv and music careers.

This film pleasantly surprised me when I went searching on IMDb for a Julian McMahon flick to pay tribute to his passing at just 56 from cancer.

It's streaming to rent or buy on Apple TV and it's a solid gold Australian ripper that's so much fun in an industry that often forgets to entertain.

"Swinging Safari" is even better if you lived through this epoch Down Under with so many pop culture references, including the soundtrack, Super 8 movies, fashion, cars, homes, furniture, sets, props and heaps more.

The period detail is first class and fun!

Want to laugh out loud and forget the real world for 97 minutes then this coming of age, raunchy comedy "Swinging Safari" is just what the doctor ordered.

    It's frickin' hilarious!

Sam Neill is probably glad he's not still attached to the Jurassic franchise which he helped kickstart as far back as 1993.

Fast forward 32 years later and "Jurassic World: Rebirth" (2025) is promising what's on the box.

Does it deliver on yet another film based on the writings of the late genius of 6 foot nine inches tall Michael Crichton?

Not really, but even Steven Spielberg doesn't care.

Originally Director on "Jurassic Park" he now gets Executive Producer credits and he's still laughing all the way to the bank because this franchise is a money spinner.

There is way too much dialogue for an action movie that's forcing us to feel for characters we've barely gotten to know let alone care for.

I didn't feel invested in any of them.

Don't start me on the intrepid sailing family subplot and the baby dinosaur (read: baby Yoda "Mandalorian") that's clearly a marketing ploy to sell tickets and toys.

The father's a pussy, his baby girl is a pain and his teenage daughter's boyfriend is completely insufferable to the point where you want a dinosaur to shred him up whilst he's urinating.

Why are they even sailing in dinosaur infested waters and then later dividing the screen time from the real action of the mercenaries?

On opening night though "Jurassic World: Rebirth" did what few movies have done lately...packed a cinema.

In an era of streaming and BluRay getting bums on seats is one of the most difficult stunts for any movie maker.

Watch out for: Giant freaky "D-Rex" that looked like both "Alien" and "T-Rex" got jiggy one Hot August Night on an equatorial island amongst the swaying palm trees under the silvery light of the moon.

The result is hideously Side Show Bob.

Plus all the douche bag characters get eaten and die horribly painful deaths.

Unfortunately, the star power of Scarlett Johansson, Rupert Friend, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali wasn't enough to carry this dumb film for over two hours and 14 minutes.

The backdrop of the abandoned island takes us back to a vibe similar to the isolated island of Isla Nublar and gives viewers the usual desolation after something went terribly wrong in the lab at the beginning of the movie.

Director Gareth Edwards ("Godzilla" 2014) loves his "Monsters" (2010) and he doesn't shy away from some terrifying ones in "Jurassic World: Rebirth" on land, air and sea.

This one is set 5 years after "Jurassic World: Dominion" and there's some new mutations of dinosaur DNA worth checking out.

Some swim, others fly and others would clap their hands if they could when they're happy and they know it.

I only wished it was more of a rebirth.

There are moments where the magic of the Jurassic Park series is captured, but I was expecting more, although I know it's not possible to regain the awe we all felt watching the OG with the Brachiosaurus.

All your old favourite dinosaurs are back in the jungle, plus a few new mutations in this outing.

"Jurassic World: Rebirth" is a missed opportunity to reset this enduring series of films, however you will once again be afraid, very afraid of these monsters that have been roaming this universe for three decades.

If you love being scared by deadly dinosaurs and asinine scenarios this might be the night of your life, just don't litter your snickers bar wrapper in the cinema 'cos it might wipe out their entire expensive, high tech security system.
