Antonio Banderas is terrific in the role he was born to play. With the exception a pretty annoying performance from the almost always annoying Anthony Hopkins, Banderas' supporting cast is also very good. Director Martin Campbell does a great job delivering some big time action. "The Mask of Zorro" is a lot of fun. (I first saw this movie in the theater, Fresh Meadows, NY, when it first came out.)
Donald Sutherland does a good job in the first half of "Eye of the Needle". His mad dog killer of a spy was for the first four or five people he kills with that giant switch blade. But after a while, all that stuff with that shiny knife gets kind of silly. During the second of the movie when he tries to humanize his character he falls flat. He ends up just walking around with a puss on his face. As far as his leading lady (Kate Nelligan) goes, she left me flat as well. Nelligan looks good at times but, mostly, she does nothing for me. "Eye of the Needle" is a chick flick disguised as a spy thriller.
Writer/producer/director/composer John Carpenter somehow makes lemonade out lemons with "They Live". Carpenter had to overcome some big obstacles to pull this movie off. First of the alien make-up looks stupid. Also, Meg Foster is, as always, a big negative. That lady and her freaky eyes has never done anything for me. That said, "They Live" is a fun, kind of goofy, movie.
