I watched this while working on a list of the best movies that either continue or conclude a TV show. Near the top of that list lies Mask of the Phantasm, El Camino, and the first SpongeBob Movie, and now I've got Is It Fall Yet somewhere in the middle. It's not a very extensive list so that's not a knock- I'd say I like this one movie less than the Simpsons movie, and one movie above DuckTales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp. I love Daria more than a lot of other cartoons and I loved this movie too, but that's just cause I love Daria and not cause this stands on it's own two feet cinematically. Is It Fall Yet is just about as good as any other movie in the 'it's basically just one long episode' medium... maybe a tier below The Bob's Burgers Movie.
It's my first time seeing this show and I feel like every episode I watch improves on the last. Sometimes the situations Larry gets in can be a little contrived but it's all for the sake of a good joke, and I haven't felt like something "hasn't worked" yet. Well this episode fires on every cylinder in the realm of humor cohesion. From the get-go he is adjusting the room temperature at the memorial for Cheryl's aunt, and the way it's filmed and edited is just perfect. I actually think this show hits the ground running as far as a first season; I've only seen select clips from future episodes so I can't speak to how much stronger they are than this beginning, but as far as first seasons go I think CURB is winning.
This induction is really special for several reasons: I'm glad that Jon Stewart got to talk Carlin because that is always a joy to witness- I'm glad John Mulaney promoted and encouraged the same love and happiness that Robin Williams' comedy was wrought with- Chelsea Handler speaking truth and not making me roll my eyes was new for me and I enjoyed it very much, and I have never been happier to see Chappelle on stage surmising a man of true importance. If you love comedy and the history of comedy like I do, this is a treat. If you love seeing honest people lay down their pride in honor of the great figures that paved the way, then this is it. If you love Pete Davidson, well then maybe you'll like this special even more than I did.
