As a child of the 80s whose sense of humor and taste in comedy, as well as music, was largely shaped by Weird Al, from the parodies, to the original songs, and UHF, this movie is perfect. In the increasingly overcrowded musical biopic genre, it seems commonplace to add made-up storylines to make these films more dramatic. Thankfully, they didn't do that here: just a straightforward story of Al Yankovic's extraordinary life. It's also the first movie I have ever seen that can hold a candle to the Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story. They are telling me this review is to short and it needs more characters. Ah. There we go.
I think this is exactly where a lot of women are of this age. Watching the world change while we change inside of it is difficult. That is life. Dealing with loss and change, having to process unmet expectations. I think this show deals with those things in an honest way.
This show manages to bring the same feeing as the original while also being completely different. It finds a way to address modern social issues while poking fun at everybody on both sides of those issues. It pokes fun at the original characters, and doesn't try to present them as heroes. It uses them to drive the new cast. It's hard to separate the nostalgia from the new show to give this a proper rating. But if you grew up with saved by the bell and have enjoyed the occasional rewatch of it over the last 35 years, you should be able to find something you enjoy in this. But what do I know, I even enjoyed the unauthorized saved by the bell story.
