If you want to be heralded as a great director, just use your movie as utter meta-commentary on the mechanisms of the plots found in violent horror movies, or on fiction in general. Showing that you understand these mechanisms means that you're smart and that you have risen above the need to make an entertaining movie for the audience.
I don't care that Haneke is smart. I want the product. But making an actual good story is hard, and that's what artists should be aiming to excel at, instead of trying to deconstruct art itself.
However, other than that, the movie is actually really good. I liked it up until the ending. It had crazy good acting, great shots and an intriguing plot. It's the more unconventional stuff in this movie that I don't like. If this had stayed on the tracks instead of being pretentious, it could have been amazing.
