We've seen the 'psycho-playing-games-with-people plot' before in Saw, Cabin in the Woods and even the 2017 horror flick with the same name and the 2019 version of Escape Room doesn't bring much new to the table, but hell, it sure is interesting to watch.
Escape Room is a thriller starring a group of people that have to face difficult puzzles to Escape a maze of deadly rooms.
By far the most interesting part of the movie is seeing them solve all the deadly puzzles they have to face. The set was definitely quite impressive and made for an epic and grand atmosphere. The puzzles were unique and raised my heartbeat quite sometime, like a good horror/thriller is supposed to do.
Having said that, the Escape Room does have its fair share of plot holes. It also relies heavily on other classic horror movies like Saw and Cabin in the Woods. That's understandable and doesn't bother me most of the time, but there is a scene at very end of the movie that feels kind of ripped of from Saw, in a way that was very obvious. They could've found another more creative way to deal with that.
The acting is okay, but not great. The actors did a reasonable job and they certainly do not annoy in a way that bad acting could. When I think back to the movie, I don't think anyone of the cast stands out in particular. Not in a bad way and not in a good way.
But overall: Escape plan is an entertaining movie if you like riddles and a good adrenaline rush.
And most importantly: it is DEFINITELY better than the Escape Room movie from a year earlier.
