I saw the film of Maurice Rocket Richard only yesterday and like everybody, some most important scenes are missing, while few others do not follow the road. Though a lot less then those "clip-films" of to-day, this one is a good solid film but without continuous scenes. And in those years of 1940-1950, I sure think that the greatest of the great as a man and a hockey player should have said more about his situation and his fellows French-Canadian exploited and treated like baggage-wagon citizen on the ice (anglo payers calling him pea soup, damn Frenchmen etc.) and punished on his work (anglo bosses). The name "Canadian" instead of French-Canadian or Quebecers (not in use by that time), does mean he was a Canadian hero. Then, why the crowd at the Mapple Leaf Garden booing him instead of applauding? He was our number one hero, the whole Province of Québec whom he was its loud speaker by his will and courage of steel like we see in the film. The leading role by Roy Dupuis is so intense and powerful we forget the lacks during the film which interested me despite of that. I would have missed something not seeing this picture. Everyone should see the real story of a real French-Canadian hero.
Back in 1940-45, they called us "Canadian". Wrong! They should have titled that TV series "The story of a French-Canadian" or like the English version title "L'histoire Maurice Rocket Richard", as the word "Quebecers" was not much employed. But the Rocket would have use it in explaining his situation as a french speaking low degree citizen, when he was insulted (frog, pea soup, lousy French) by other team's players, especially in Toronto where he was booed more then anywhere else. Anyway the television series were pretty good and all the actors too. Roy Dupuis is powerful in giving all the punch to series and film as Maurice would have done himself in his own role. Both his women Macha Grenon and Julie LeBreton are super dynamic dealing with such a simple man so great.
Yes, I have seen this movie, which I adore for the story: light and fresh; the music: sentimental; the action: never a dull moment; the colors: out of this world and Debbie, never looses an once of her charms, femininity and such a pleasure to see her movies. Unfortunately the VHS I had of that entertaining film was "eaten" by another one due to a bad change of speed on my video. It could have happened to any of those classic movies I have, but not this one...Full of anger, i would have beaten myself...To-day i don't want to think too much about it, but trying to get that film as i looked everywhere but it does not seem to exist in any store on VHS or DVD. Any of you know a place where i can buy it? McFadden Flats and Andrea 88, made a wonderful try sending me copies but it did not work on my machine and i still don't understand why. Thank you again Andrea 88 and McFadden Flats for your trouble. Much obliged to IMDb for so much informations as well as services in the interesting movie world.
